Hi everyone! I’m a PhD student writing my dissertation on fandom (really, how freaking awesome is that?). I’m studying second language acquisition, and I’m interested in fans whose first language isn’t English. I think you guys are indescribably awesome, and I want to know more about how you got into English-speaking fandoms and how it affected your English learning/use. I'm posting here because, well, I adore podfic and it's so often unrecognized as a fan practice. I really want to bring some of these lesser-known (in academic circles, at least) activities to light!

All you’d need to do is fill out this super quick, completely anonymous survey. There’s a consent form with more information on the first page, and you can email me at vonie@email.arizona.edu for more information. Thank you so much to anyone who does the survey, I love all of you more than I can say, you’re seriously making my dream come true.

It occured to me the other day that the last time my to-listen Folder-of-Doom coughed up a properly winter-themed podfic was...August or so.  When it was refreshing, but not exactly seasonal.

I'm having Seasonal Feelings this year, and really want to wallow in some appropriately themed podfic--but podfic discovery is still an imperfect art, and I'm not sure which of the 500 or so fics in the to-listen FoD might be relevant, not to mention the many wonderful things out there that I haven't found yet.

So.  Recs, anyone, for podfic set around (or featuring, if it's a longer story) winter or any of the winter holidays?

(To make this a more general purpose post, I'd love it if people would go ahead and post regardless of fandom.  I'll listen to any rating, gen to filthy smut, in 'most any fandom I have passing knowledge in and a few that I don't but read/listen to anyway; my major higher-traffic fandoms are Avengers, Star Trek, Stargate: Atlantis, Bond (Skyfall), Sherlock (BBC and ACD), Hockey RPF, and Harry Potter.  I'd be particularly squeaky with glee over Avengers, Sherlock (BBC or ACD) or Harry Potter, all of which seem like they ought to have LOTS of lovely holiday stories..)

(Mods, I'm trusting that this is an OK request, and tagging this as post:recs in the hopes that it will be...)

Welcome to the final day of Amplirecathon! Today, anybody may post any recs they want, without needing to have signed up.

This is the first of two Official Mod Posts for gathering recs that will be made -- a rec request post! In the comments of this post, if there are any categories of podfic rec that you'd like to ask for, make a request and others can reply to your comment with podfic recs that fit your request.

For example, if you're like us and loved [personal profile] kalakirya's characterization recs and would like to request other podfics where people feel the reader particularly stood out at their characterization of one or more of the characters in the story, you can post a comment with that request. Or if you are trying out a specific new fandom and want more recs in that fandom, or want recs of readers who have a certain style, etc.

Got it? Okay! Request and rec away!

Hi there! In my enthusiasm at discovering that I would actually be in the UK at the same time as the nine worlds geekfest, i may have volunteered to give a wee talk thing on podficcing, as part of the fanfic stream.

Um.

So, I know how and why I podfic, but I'd like to give a more rounded and helpful introduction, and suddenly I'm wondering who the hell I thought I was to jump in there as some kind of expert, when I'm terribly out of the loop and only know what I do anyway. Anybody got any thoughts on what I should include/cite/explain, in the capacity of person-who's-representing-our-artform?

(Would it be inappropriate to make a wee q'aire about your thoughts/experiences/preferences/tech /methods etc?)

Basically: help me, Obiwan Kepodficcers, you're my only hope!

I'm looking for a pinch-hitter for the due South podfic exchange! The minimum wordcount is 1000 words, and the original deadline is the 31st of March, but we could give you an extension of up to a week if you need it. Email me at luzulae@gmail.com if you're interested in helping out (or comment below with your email address), and I'll reply with the characters/pairings that the recipient asked for. I don't want to list them here, to preserve secrecy, but it's perfectly okay if you say no after that, if you feel you couldn't do a good job of reading those characters/pairings.

Thank you! ♥

I'm hoping some of you will know something about this and possibly lend me some advice, as I'm not sure what to do.

In the last few days, someone mentioned that they couldn't dl one of my podfics from Mediafire. When I went over to check, I found that that file and quite a few others had been marked "copyrighted," which apparently means that people can't dl them anymore and I can only share them by generating a one-time download code/link.

I submitted a service request to Mediafire, which resulted in this response:

Thank you for contacting MediaFire.

Unfortunately, MediaFire is not searchable. Will you please provide the URLs to the files so we may review it for any Terms of Service violations?

We appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

And now I'm afraid to do that, for fear it will result in everything getting bumped, or worse, and I like Mediafire, usually. Can anyone offer any advice? Please?

I've been doing some really dull tasks at work lately and podfic has been my lifeline to sanity. You are all AMAZING. On that note, I would like to request more Supernatural podfics in the following ships:

  • Dean/Sam
  • Castiel/Sam
  • Castiel/Dean/Sam
  • Lucifer/Sam
  • Gabriel/Sam
  • Bobby/Crowley
  • ANY Adam Milligan Ship or Gen

I am willing to create a podfic cover for any podfic that is at least 15 minutes long. Here is my art masterpost, if you're interested in seeing the sort of art I've done. I welcome all ratings; however, I tend to avoid deathfics and breakup fics.

Please consider this offer open until I officially close it. ♥

ETA: If you want some suggestions, I've started a delicious recs list. The bulk of the stories I've added thus far are rather long, but there are some short enough to be podficced without too much trouble. I have way too much time on my hands, so I even marked with stories are by podfic-friendly authors. XD

Hi folks!

I'm relatively new to podfic and joined the community to get some good recommendations and listen to the works of others to improve my own drivel. I've been really happy and impressed with all I've seen (and heard) so far.

As I've been perusing the archives, I got to thinking. Podficing appears to be overwhelmingly female. Could anyone point me in the direction of fellow guys who podfic? ...If there is such a thing?

Ultimately, I suspect this is coming from a place of anxiety on my part. As a not-exactly-young-anymore fellow with a "femmy" voice, I'm waffling over the way I sound. My female impersonation is good. Really good--we're talking "Kurt Hummel from Glee," full-on Lady Voice, often mistaken for a woman over the phone. I've pretty much been recording with a female-style voice and have only just started to practice narrating in a lower register. I'm not happy with the sound. It might be nice to hear how other guys are coping with the enunciation and cadence issues which come with a deeper, less "crisp" speaking voice. If anyone has links or knows of men who podfic, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

UPDATED:
You can hear my female impersonation and character voices HERE, along with my regular speaking voice, downloadable HERE. I feel like a prat, but whatever. I'll get over it in time.

Hi, all you wonderful mods, readers and reviewers on amplificathon! Do any of you know of ANY podfic read by male readers? I have been a member here for a while now, but I have yet to hear a male voice.

I am primarily interested in slash-fics (m/m, or rather Mmmm-hm!), but all kinds of fandoms and ratings are deeply appreciated. (I have listened to volunteered readings by males from LibriVox, but as you know, fanfics are a different realm than regular public domain-literature.)

Thank you for taking the time to read this, tips or not! <3

ETA: Success! Thanks for the many great suggestions! *hugs this community*

Hey, all.  Anyone have time in the next couple days to do a very low-intensity beta on an SPN story?

Sam/Dean, non-explicit.  Run-time's about an hour-and-a-half.  It's a gift-recording and my first time reading SPN, so I'm hoping to run it by someone to increase the chances of weeding out any blatantly annoying bits.

If this is acceptable here, I was wondering if any of you wonderful readers out there had ever considered making the Firefly story Big Damned Zombies, Sir into a podfic if the author is willing? It's very funny gen fic, with Jayne being the one who is "zombified", with bonus monkey brains.

Hi all! So, um, I feel really unsure posting this, I'm not sure how it fits into podficcer/author ettiquette. I've seen a couple of posts similar to this one, so I figured it couldn't hurt to try. I know from my own experience as a podficcer that, generally, you find a story you enjoy and then ask the author their permission to record.

I've recorded a few of my own fics in the past, and never gave blanket permission on that "pro-podfic authors" post because I've never really been all that secure about my own writing. I recently wrote a long Supernatural AU fic for the [livejournal.com profile] deancasbigbang called The Definition of Perpetual Motion. I'm not so conceited that I think it's entitled to a reading or anything, but it's a story that has become very important to me, and if someone who read it happened to like it enough to want to record it... I'd be over the moon about that. It's rated NC-17, but there is actually hardly anything in regards to explicit sex (one erotic dream) and the rating is mostly due to some sensitive subject material (if you haven't already read it and decide to check it out PLEASE read the warnings in the masterlist). I'm not going to expect anything, but consider this my blanket author permission, I suppose. XD

Hi all!

[livejournal.com profile] spn_fs_exchange (a Supernatural and CWRPF femmeslash exchange) is setting out to get round one recorded. We've had a good number of volunteers so far - really good, considering how many of them have never been involved with format - but we're still looking at ratio of three to four stories apiece, which is way more than I'm comfortable with with so many new readers. I'm hoping that some of you will be interested in joining us!

If you want to know what we'll be reading, here's a link to the Round One Masterpost. There are twenty-eight stories, two fanmixes with attached fic, and two mixes with small drabbles interspersed, though we'll probably settle our focus on the first twenty-eight for now. Stories range in length from 1300 words to 11 300 and span a whole range of pairings, including a good number of minor characters as well as sexswaped Sam and Dean.

If you think you'd like to join us, I've got a post up that's measuring interest in the project. Hopefully you'll all be seeing the results of this project in the upcoming months!

[personal profile] general_jinjur suggested I post my longing and desire for a podfic of [livejournal.com profile] sevenfists's Distance in the Afterlife. It's 15,700 words of incredible bandom storytelling and it's a beloved favorite. I know the author has had podfic recorded of another story, The Sky-High City, but I can't speak to blanket permission. I hope the story inspires someone!

Hello all readers,

My name is Kerlih, I'm a fellow podfic reader, and for the purpose of this post I am a Film & Digital Arts student at Pacific Audio Visual Institute in Vancouver. For my Digital Production class I have a list of projects all pertaining to audiobooks/podiobooks/podfics.

I'm here to request if any reader in the Vancouver & Greater area is willing to participate in an on-camera interview, which will be used for the education of conducting interviews and part of a newsmagazine piece on podiobook and/or podfic.

In the case that there aren't any readers in the Vancouver & Greater area, my option B will be doing an on-camera interview with a audiobook/podiobook/podfic listener specifically for the interview assignment, and an audio interview with a reader for the newsmagazine video.

The tentative date this interview needs to be done by is July 22nd, though there may be a possible extension.

If anyone is interested in participating or have any question/concerns please respond in the comments, or PM or email me at kc_blackfire@hotmail.com if you don't want your location given out.

From,

I'm trying something new and attempting a multi-voice project(!) for Amplificathon. Lately I’ve been listening to NPR podcasts at work and I got inspired to record a podfic of [personal profile] nestra ’s story “Wait Wait Don’t Eat Me”. I’m looking for people to play the roles of the announcer, panel members, and zombie contestant. The roles are short, familiarity with the original show is helpful but not required, and I’m not worried about accents. I’d like to get people’s audio files by May 5 to have enough time for editing. If you’re interested, please check out the details at my livejournal. Thanks!

Hey there - I do hope that this isn't an inappropriate post? If so, please tell me and I'll delete.

Here's the thing: I've just started recording [livejournal.com profile] aramuin's excellent J2 BigBang fic Queensguard. Two chapters in, and I'm fairly happy with the way I've handled the inset bits of found text (newspaper reports etc etc) so far - but what I'd forgotten, because apparently I'm Queen of the Forgetful People, is that every chapter starts with an inset box of found text - Larry King interviewing someone, say, or politicians making statements, or something like that.

Which is TERRIFIC, and part of the fabulousness of the text, and I can go ahead and do this myself - but I was wondering if other people might be interested in helping? I mean, we're only talking a minute or two of a few minutes' speech* for each recording - seventeen different sections in total - so I don't think it should take all that long to do? If people felt so inclined? And, truthfully, the podfic of 'Written by the Victors' was what got me into making podfics myself, because it filled me with so much glee to hear the voices of various different readers. It would be cooler than a fucking cool thing to make something with many voices, I think, and this is the kind of story that begs for something like that as an aural equivalent to how the text works. So I'm putting the breaks on my own recording, to see if people might be interested in making it a collaboration; if so I can go back and undo the inset sections I've already included, and create a consistent style of incorporating these other voices into the text.

If you might be interested in contributing a few minutes of speech to making this happen, comment below and I'll put together a list of all the sections so we can allot them to volunteers & take it from there.

Thank you kindly!

eta

(Further to the recent discussion of multiple versions/covers, since I'm in PSA mode I should probably add that I don't consider myself having "dibs" on any of the stories I've recorded, and that I'm totally good with other people recording versions if they want to [although it it's a story I've WRITTEN, I'd appreciate the heads up]. I especially understand this if it's a non-UK text, because I know that some people find accents a deal-breaker and I certainly don't want to reduce people's access to awesome stories. So, y'know, if you're sitting at home thinking "The bitch! I wanted to record 'Queensguard', and now she's going to make it all Masterpiece Theatre-ish! Damn her!", then please do still go for it, mate! The more the merrier, eh?)

eta II
*okay, having copied out all the sections, I can see that we're maybe talking five minutes for a couple, actually - but still pretty brief sections, I promise!

eta III (Just call me Columbo)

I've copied out the various sections and my Cunning Plan For World Domination suggestion for how we do this here. If you're inclined to join in, please come and pic a section to read & claim dibs in the comments there!
