Like a lot of other posters, I started listening several years ago to podfic, and boy, did I fall hard. I think they're wonderful, and they've gotten me through miles and miles of walking, long commutes, and completing household projects. I don't fall asleep to them, though.

Some podfics that made me go 'This is so cool.' )

Readers I've enjoyed and would like to hear more from. )

[livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian recently wrote some meta about Supernatural 5.11, "Sam, Interrupted," in which she said SPN fanfic writers have so thoroughly explored the psyches of Sam and Dean that a 42-minute TV episode was bound to seem unsatisfying in comparison. So for my rec day, I thought I would delve into some of those fics on podfic.

I'm concentrating on SPN for a couple of reasons: First, it's almost exclusively what I listen to. I commute an hour each way on two-lane roads through Midwest farmland, and that seems to set the tone for what I most want to hear. It's perfect to complement the landscape with the Winchester brothers in their Impala. Second, those boys have more issues than National Geographic, so there's plenty to work with. (There will, however, be a bonus due South rec at the end.)

(Oh, and a couple of these got recced already during the last two weeks, but since I've got a theme going here, I'll still talk about them. But I added a couple of new ones too.)

Here Be Monsters: Podfics That Map the Psychological Terrain of the Brothers Winchester )

Bonus rec for reasons that will be explored at this juncture )

So them's my issues; I welcome additional recs in the comments!

Title: "Where the Ways Divide" 'Verse
Author: [livejournal.com profile] vain_glorious
Reader: [livejournal.com profile] cookiemom6067
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: None
Rating: PG-13
Disclaimer: Stargate Atlantis, and all recognizable characters and settings, belong to Acme Shark and MGM. This reading is intended for the free enjoyment of fans, and is not being undertaken for personal profit.

Summary: "They find the Runner on the planet with the deadly sun. He's thin and dirty, and not particularly interested in talking. " This began as a ficlet written for SGA-Flashfic's
"Role Reversal" challenge. The Runner is Sheppard, and the people that find him are Ronon's squad from a Sateda that has not been destroyed by the Wraith.

Reader's note: One of the great things about an AU is the way in which a writer can take the familiar and make it into something completely new. One of the things I liked the most about vain-glorious's fic is the way that Ronon is the same Ronon we all know and love, but tempered by a happy marriage to Melena, a planet and society intact instead of destroyed, and the absense of his seminal seven years on the run from the Wraith. I find her settings and characterizations plausible and loved the idea of a Ronon that is not the battered badass we all know, but a badass just the same. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] duckyone, who won this podfic in my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auction, and to [livejournal.com profile] vain_glorious, for permitting me to record it.

The "Divide 'Verse" is told in four parts, with, as I understand it, more on the way. I hope to record the coming installments as well, as I am able.

Since completing the Woobie 'Verse for the podbang, I have become aware of the preference of many podfic consumers for podfics that are not colored by effects and music. With that in mind, I stripped Woobie of all but the beginning and ending music and uploaded that version for those that prefer their fic straight up. This means no change for the other stories in the 'verse, because I didn't add any music or effects to their narratives.

Part 1
Part 2

I have also corrected the "original" version of Part 1 for music and effects that were out of sync/too loud. As soon as I re-listen to my copy and make sure all is well, I will be posting that as well.

ETA: Well, there are a few problems with my "corrected original" - I need to re-do a few parts near the end of part 1. Hope to finish it this weekend.

Since it's both my rec day and the last day of the Amplirecathon, I thought I'd post a link to the series of podfic recs I've been running in my LJ. Too tired to craft a link, so here's where it can be found: http://nwhepcat.livejournal.com/tag/podfic+recs.

I will also be reccing podfics this month in [livejournal.com profile] spnroundtable.

Enjoy, and feel free to share your favorites!

So, here's the deal...

I love podfics, but I'm really bad at remembering to go back and thank the podficcers. I rarely remember to tell them how much I appreciate their hard work, their dedication, their skills and talents. I usually forget to go back and tell the readers how they've made me giggle while I'm working out at the gym, or smile secretly at some sexy bit of story. I never think to mention how sometimes I get teary-eyed while grocery shopping, listening to the voices in my ear.

And I should. I should tell the readers, these artists, how their works move me, makes me happy and sad, engages my thoughts and my emotions, brings the characters and their stories further into life. Gives them a voice, lets them shout from the rooftops, lets them sing their songs, love, laugh, mourn.

There's something magical about that and it always amazes me.

I wanted to do something to hightlight the sheer number of different readers in the C6D fandoms. There's a lot of them, but I picked one podfic from each of them. I tried to pick my favorite podfic for each reader, but sometimes I chose a different one for variety. A few of the podfic have been previously recced, a few of them are rarities, ones not stored at the Audiofic Archive, a few are from one-shot readers. Most are from due South, a couple are from Wilby Wonderful, Hard Core Logo, or Slings & Arrows, a couple are from rarer fandoms.

Every one of these is worth a listen.

Each reader has their own voice, with their own unique way of reading the stories, their differing methods of interpreting the characters. They all are articulate and expressive, well versed with tone and intonation and pacing.

These podficcers are amazing, every one of them, and they deserve praise and recognition for all that they do. They deserve to be heard. Listen to their stories.

Recs under here... )
