Many of us now offer a streaming option for our podfics. And because I had posted a tutorial on how to embed Google's media player, there are a lot of us that used that code to get our streams.

A couple months ago the Google hosting on that player started to become unstable, causing most of our streams to become broken. Thanks to a fix found by [personal profile] argentumlupine, I was able to upload a copy of the player to my website and offer it to anyone who'd like to use it.

I've also been talking to AO3, and they've done some coding on their end, so now the code will work over there as well.

So, the new streaming code, for anyone interested is:

<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashvars="audioUrl=LINKTOMP3HERE" src="http://podfic.com/player/audio-player.swf" width="400" height="27" allowscriptaccess="never" allownetworking="internal"></embed>

With LINKTOMP3HERE changed to an actual link to the mp3.

Note: you need to have the podfic hosted somewhere that allows for streaming (many of the free upload sites do not allow this), but my offer to host podfics is still open to anyone. :)

Today is the first day of [community profile] pod_aware! A full week devoted to spreading awareness about podfic!

Today's theme is Podfic 101/Why We Podfic. To kick things off, there's a podcast on the topic. I've also written a podfic tutorial.

Come check out the comm and see what other treasures have been posted and feel free to join in! (you don't need to have signed up to participate, and you can post anything you'd like to help spread podfic awareness, your work doesn't need to be podfic related).

Podfic: it's an audio recording of a fanfic, like an audiobook, how awesome is that? Fans from all over put their voices out there so you can enjoy fanfic on the go or just in a different way. To find out more about podfic, why we do it and how to get started, check out [community profile] pod_aware on LJ or DW.

...wait, you mean you DIDN'T realize that a 3300-word tutorial/tl;dr session about tagging podfics in iTunes was missing from your life?!

Don't worry, I fixed that.

Oh god, this is legit 100% [livejournal.com profile] paraka's fault. GO BLAME HER.

I thought some of you might be interested in a post I made last week about how to stream your podfic, over at a post over at [community profile] podfic_tips. I also made a follow up post to [community profile] podficmeta about why you want to offer streaming.

So, now that you've all had a bit of time to play around with your chosen graphics program, time for some basic terms and concepts!

Since there seems to be sufficient interest, I'm going to go ahead with my series of podfic cover tutorials. Note that these same concepts can be applied to a lot of graphics making, although the things I'm going to address are going to be MOST applicable to podfic covers and straight-up fic covers, as well as fanmix covers. (Icons and wallpapers tend to be a little different, but a lot of the technique is the same.)

( So you want to start making podfic covers, huh? )

(I promise this is the last time I'm going to spam the community today! XD)

So I've been talking with some people lately, and I idly mentioned the idea of maybe doing a few podfic cover tutorials, and like three people went, "YES BESS DO THAT OMG!" So.

A) Would anyone be interested in some cover art tutorials?
B) If yes, what would you want to know? Something general? Something specific? Is there one thing that I do that you're like, "how does she do that?" (for reference, all of my cover art can be seen here) (If people are interested, fyi, I totally plan on doing one JUST ON TEXT. Just thought I'd get that out of the way right off the top ~.^)

I really, really love podfic cover art, and if there's anything I can do to get more people making cover art, I will totally write whatever tutorials it takes :)

Note: This post has been in the works for over a year. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur and [livejournal.com profile] aphelant for their help along the way and to [livejournal.com profile] lunchy_munchy for motivating me to finally finish it. ♥

In podfic meta discussions, it periodically comes up that some people want to leave feedback on podfic but just aren't sure what to say. This post is an attempt to give some new ideas to anyone who would like to expand their repertoire for expressing their thoughts about podfic. It is not meant to pressure listeners to leave feedback if they don't feel comfortable with that. Hopefully it will work more like a toolbox, providing tools that people can use to help them accomplish their pre-existing goals more easily and successfully.

The format was inspired by this post about femslash, and the content was inspired by this post about vid feedback.

Five Ways to Give Great Podfic Feedback

1. Say you listened and enjoyed )

2. Describe your listening experience: where you were, how it made you feel )

3. Comment on the reader's voice and style )

4. Highlight specific parts you liked and why )

5. Tell your history/relationship with the reader )

Of course, although these are different angles to approach thinking about feedback from, when you are writing your feedback you don't have to stick to just one. You can pull from multiple categories and mix and match to create an awesome piece of feedback. You can also draw on what you know about reviewing other forms of performance. If you feel comfortable talking about theatre or TV or movie acting, the same language you would use to describe those performances can be applied to a podfic performance and make for beautiful feedback.

There are a couple things you might want to avoid: "I usually think podfic is weird, but..." and "sorry if this is creepy, but..." It doesn't feel good to hear that listeners dislike your chosen art form, even if it's embedded in a compliment about this particular instance of it. And it's not creepy to tell somebody you enjoyed their artwork in the way they intended it to be enjoyed, which means no reader is going to be creeped out that you loved their voice, and if they chose to read sex scenes, they're not going to be creeped out if you found those scenes sexy.

So, there it is! Hopefully this will be a useful resource that helps and inspires listeners who want to leave podfic feedback. (For those who want systems to help keep track of the podfic they listen to and remember to come back to it, there are some tips here.) Remember that the five ways listed above are just ideas, not a rulebook. Be creative! Be spontaneous! Be sloppy! To most podfic artists, any feedback is great (and rare) and whatever you put in your comment will be loved and cherished by the recipient.
