Garageband tutorial - basics of podficcing

I'm the type that wants to know what every button does, so I was really surprised when people asked about basic GarageBand stuff on podfic_tips or said it was harder to edit on GarageBand than audacity... I got all up in arms and am trying to rectify that!

I watched and listened to this, and great job with it. I learned quite a bit, including the difference between the Isight microphone and using Female Narrator, which is very helpful. It's something I wondered about, but was afraid to mess up my recordings by experimenting with. I'll use Female Narrator from here on out. I also liked the tip about pre-entering the "My Info" information, because I'd been entering it every time I exported to Itunes, which is boring and time-consuming. Not anymore! And I thought the part about saving to disk was helpful, too - I thought that it meant a disk like a CD, but actually it is the hard drive. Nicely narrated, well-thought out, clear, and concise - thanks for putting this together, this is going to be an asset for everybody. I'm looking forward to your one on editing, I expect I'll learn even more from that one. Thank you!

That's awesome! Thank you! I'm really happy there were some tricks there you didn't know :D

I'm going to get a little more in depth with those Narrator/Isight options in another tute actually, lots more things you can do to change it! Don't worry about messing with your recording, it works off of a base recording, and so if you revert your changes back to your original setting it'll go back to normal :)

The first time I saw the "my info" bit, I thought, hold on that looks familiar... low and behold ;) I don't ever export straight to disk either, because I actually use itunes to make my file sizes smaller but, once again, for another tute :D

Everyone's suggestions have been really helpful! I'm no expert so I can't answer everything, but I'm trying my best to cover as much as I can :)

Editing. It's going to be a barrel of fun...

The parts I learned were near the end, about making your voice louder. I will definitely have to re-watch that part before I podfic again because my podfics do tend to be a bit soft, despite having a loud voice and being nearer the mic. And the more hardcore, the better! Can't wait for the next one! :D

This is an EXCELLENT video! I'm self-taught with garage band and actually use different methods, but I'm fascinated. I'll definitely be toggling a few things as this series goes on, I think. I really liked your tip on organizing metadata (even thought that's more of an itunes thing) - this is the best way I've seen to highlight both the author and the reader, and I'll be using it from now on. :) The way you've set up this tutorial is so clear and concise, it was a pleasure to watch.

I'm self taught too, and I would love to know how you go about it! (More knowledge is good!)

The metadata was actually a query I got on my brainstorming post, and it seemed like the sort of thing to include in a basics tute. The hardest part of all of this is actually trying to cut down on information - I thought of going one step further and showing where you can find your file in Finder, but then I just thought either people will figure it out, or they'll figure it out when they search for it, and thus the only surviving reference to this was the line "it will be saved under the author's name" in the tute.

Even though I've only been using the program for about 8 months, it's actually difficult to pick out what I need and don't need to talk about - like you don't want to belittle people but you don't want to gloss over information that people might not understand?? It's a hard line to walk :(

I've had this bookmarked since forever, but never had the chance to sit down and watch through the entire tutorial. Now that I have a couple of fics I want to record, I thought that maybe I should consider switching from Audacity to Garageband. The "R" and "spacebar" function seems super useful for editing on-the-go! I find it not-so-convenient to do in Audacity, but I have a tendency to procrastinate with going back and editing, so maybe editing on-the-go is something to consider. ;) Thanks so much for making this tutorial and I look forward to your upcoming editing tutorial! Editing is such a pain and I hope you'll have some more neat tricks up your sleeves! :>

Thanks! It's been ages since I've looked at hte editing tute tbh, it's just freaking difficult to know whether its patronising or not informative enough, plus the logistics of capturing the necessary examples is completely frustrating! (as if it hasn't already been 6 months...)

Anyway, glad you found it informative, and I hope you make the switch :D ::pets her GB fondly::
