I commissioned a set of 20 podfic-related icons from the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] tebtosca in the current [livejournal.com profile] fandomaid fundraiser for for the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.

They are wonderful! And they are all sharable and available to everyone who loves podfic. Just give their creator due credit and appreciation.

so it turns out today's prizes had a theme! wait wait that sounds like i was surprised, when of course it was my plan all along. ahem.

i'm always excited by the folks who win the fashionably late award because they are made of enthusiasm! posting to a six-week points-based challenge with your first entry in the last week is probably not the way to win based on points. but it scores you entry into a pretty exclusive club of fashionably-late-award-winners! and considering the exclusive nature, we're awarding a lot of them this year.

congratulations, winners, and thank you for not getting discouraged by the date, and joining in the fun anyway! all of your prize graphics are below the cut, but all of your names are: [personal profile] applegeuse, [personal profile] chasingriver, [profile] illutu, [personal profile] inmyriadbits, [personal profile] itsadrizzit, [personal profile] lunate8, [personal profile] myira, [profile] nikojen, and [personal profile] zwischendenstuehlen! HOORAY!

now that we've dealt with who posted last, we can get to who posted first! and we have two winners! HOW'S THAT POSSIBLE HOW CAN TWO PEOPLE BE FIRST you ask?

didn't we just get done discussing linear time, and how it's for the birds? well. it's also...confusing? and following a lot of poking at entries and also at poor tired podmod memories, we called a winner, and that winner was multiple. the true spirit of the intrepid award is in not being afraid to plunge right in, and both of the winners embodied that this year! [personal profile] kalakirya and [personal profile] kdheart! congratulations on your bravery and also your lack of procrastination!

winner time again! :)

next up is the GMT-11 prize, for the final podfic posted under the wire, just before the deadline!

i always expect this one to be more hotly contested, but i guess the fact that it does involve an element of chance (what time will podmod wake up and close the fest? honestly, your guess is as good as ours. also, linear time: is it really something we should be endorsing? i'm not so sure, it totally gets in the way of my plans on a regular basis) and also that it's by nature contested when everyone is tired warns everyone away.

well, happily, [personal profile] paraka stepped up and capped the event! and not even on a technicality - it was very definitely still the final day when she posted.

congratulations to this year's GMT-11 winner! YAY PARAKA!

hey hey it's that time! over the next two days, we'll be announcing the winners of the 2013 amplificathon!

/aside where i make a speech in which i say "...but aren't we ALL winners, really?" and get all dewy-eyed.

FIRST UP! BLIPVERT.

if you were watching closely (or watching twitter at the right time), then you'll know all about the bloodthirsty competition that raged to make the shortest possible podfic this year in order to bag the blipvert award. in the process, [personal profile] analise010 and [personal profile] kdheart pushed hard at what was possible to cut while still keeping a recording identifiably a podfic. also, they fostered a friendly rivalry until it became a feud that will surely last at least a few seconds.

okay, so i'm a little worried that [livejournal.com profile] dodificus might not see this post, because she's been afk due to her intrepid behavior. :p

but! she is still a winner. even if she might not realize it for a day or two. [livejournal.com profile] dodificus managed to leap forward bravely, posting the very first podfic in the 2009 challenge!

hooray and congratulations!

this year's [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon yielded a staggering one hundred fifty-eight hours, forty-five minutes, and thirty-four seconds of new podfic. because we weighted points for recording times this year, the top winners were rewarded for that massive productivity--but we thought that the top number of hours produced by someone outside the points-based winners circle was worth notice as well. strictly speaking, [livejournal.com profile] twilight_angel was the third most prolific reader this year. she read eleven hours, twenty minutes, and forty-one seconds worth of podfic!

so here's something we think is pretty awesome, round these parts: people who do things for the joy of doing them. making your very first post to the [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon challenge in the final week is pretty much a guarantee that you have no hope of placing, as far as points are concerned, so it's motivated by other things--the desire to be part of the celebration of fandoms and voices, the wish to give something to the community, the bravery to post just to throw in.

four people did that this year: [livejournal.com profile] lian_li, [livejournal.com profile] superstitiousme, [livejournal.com profile] parisindy, and [livejournal.com profile] verbal_kint10. these are their prizes!

so, a little mopping up.

first, prizewise!

[livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied's anthologies actually include a back cover, which didn't make it into the original post, but is here now. feel free to save it from below and tuck it into the file you have already downloaded, or if you haven't downloaded yet, the files without a back cover have been replaced by the files with a back cover. the graphic is by the lovely ms [livejournal.com profile] trialia.

back cover with tracklisting

and this is also a note to say that [livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied will also be receiving one more prize podfic, delivered privately, donated by [livejournal.com profile] general_jinjur.

mailed prizes will go out soon after the not-very organized third of [livejournal.com profile] podmod gets her damn act together. (we're not naming names, but her initials are gj. just sayin'.)

okay. second, otherwise.

this is the end of the prize posting. really, honestly, stick a fork in me, next time when we say two week prize period, we will mean it (we have a plan).

we are considering a mini-fest sometime in the fall/winter. we will be happening again next year, on the same schedule. there will be some changes, nothing dramatic, we'll tell you about them then.

keep posting and reccing here in the meantime. and hey! you know all those new readers who stepped up during the [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon? if you listened to their stuff, take a look and make sure they got some sort of feedback. at some point. on at least one recording. i mean, can we all decide to leave one piece of feedback so no one is left shouting into the void? because shouting into the void kind of sucks. and i know everyone wants to get better at this (even the people who are old hands at it), and feedback can be really hard to get on podfic.
[identity profile] podmod.livejournal.com
so one of the aims of the [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon was to introduce diversity into the podfic available in fandom. we mostly did that by pushing for more fandoms - the happy accident was diversity in story types. most ficathons have a 1,000 word minimum - which means that a lot of the rare pairings are mostly short stories, ficlets, and drabbles, topping off at around 1,000 to 2,000 words. most of the podfics recorded prior to this challenge were much, much longer than that. i mean honestly, you can't swing a cat without hitting an epic in spn and sga. that makes it a little tough to let readers or listeners dip into the format, and the amount of time commitment for anything over 4,000 words gets crazy fast, and approaches exponential at some point (yes, i once recorded a nineteen hour long podfic. i had to do a lot of wacky and improbable things to make that possible, and i try not to think about how much working time it actually took. if we want more podfic in the world, that isn't a sustainable model). short fics are manageable and actually help reflect the reality of the extant written fics! okay, i'm not sure i'm making sense, but: <3.

one of the beauties of a drabble or ficlet is the economy of words, and the demonstration of the skill it takes to convey a story in a tiny space. pulling the reader into your universe for half a breath at a time. reading those stories is a challenge, and i think it's pretty awesome that people were willing to give it a shot.

[livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied managed the very shortest of these palm-of-the-hand stories, at 47 seconds (she had a close competitor at 50 seconds!)

leviticus_lied wins the blipvert award!

finally! sorry again about the delay!

when we say this thing was a close race, boy, we mean this thing was a close race. i'll admit it - i thought [livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied had this sucker in the bag. a brand-new reader! reading in a wide variety of new fandoms! taking requests and suggestions by the armload! it's kind of like we had two first place winners, almost! it was awesome.

you know what we love, hereabouts? new readers. a high percentage of participants were new readers from the start, and we expected and encouraged that. seeing all of the late entrants was a fantastic thing as well, but i have to admit that we didn't really promote the challenge much after it started, and we didn't manage to figure out a way to reward participants for seducing new readers in to podficcing. as a consequence, the late entrants came in to an ongoing challenge as outsiders. that takes extra fortitude, and it's awesome.

but anyhow. you know what we especially love? people who finally talk themselves into trying podfic two weeks before the end of the challenge with no expectation of winning anything, who then manage to place fourth. :D

[livejournal.com profile] malnpudl's first post was made on may 25, in the last two weeks of the challenge. she managed to earn two hundred and fifty-two points, and the fashionably late award!
