The Audiofic Archive is back up and running and we're working on restoring as many as possible of the missing files. If you think you could help us locate any missing podfic files, please see squidgiepdx's post about the project which links to a spreadsheet where links to files can be added.

Please use this form to submit new podfics to the audiofic archive.

Going forwards, podfics posted on the archive will feature direct mp3 links for streaming. Information on how to add a streaming player to sites like ao3 using these links is here.

We ask for your patience and understanding that, while we're working both through the files that need to be restored, we cannot add new podfics posted to this community in a timely manner. If you want your podfic to be added to the archive asap, please use the linked form.

Once the restoration process is finished, we will begin working through the backlog of podfics on this community. When this is also finished we'll begin adding new posts to this community to the archive. We'll make another announcement when this time comes.

Because we were over the tag limit for paid accounts (and the paid time expired anyway), I started merging some mostly older single-use tags into more general categories. We already had

fandom:miscellaneous literature
fandom:miscellaneous rpf

And now I've added:

fandom:jane austen novels - 11 uses
fandom:mary renault novels - 2 uses
fandom:miyazaki films - 11 uses
fandom:miscellaneous tv - 25 uses
fandom:miscellaneous video games - 4 uses
fandom:robert heinlein works - 2 uses
fandom:sarah waters novels - 2 uses
fandom:seanan mcguire/mira grant novels - 2 uses

We could also do with fandom:miscellaneous films and maybe a few other categories? Not all eligible tags have been merged into these categories as I wasn't sure what to do about anime tv, other animated cartoons, and fandoms with adaptations/multiple media.

We're currently at 1520 tags and still can't add brand new specific fandom tags, but can merge tags into broader fandom tags where appropriate. Any requests?

ETA: I just realized we can repurpose existing tags for newer/more popular fandoms, so we've got a buzzfeed tag and a miscellaneous anime tag now.

So, the archive is entirely gone for the moment. Does anyone know anything about it, by any chance?

Hey all,

This is an unofficial update on the state of the Audiofic Archive.

As some of you may know, back in December I started organizing a crowd sourcing of the missing back catalogue of the archive. We recovered almost 14,000 the approximately 20,000 files missing, leaving just over 6,000 to go.

However on February 3 while trying to upload podfics, I got an error saying that the server was out of space. I hoped that would be a temporary error, but thus far it has not been resolved. I've contacted the head of the Archive asking for help as they are the only ones able to contact the webhosting the company to get this straightened out but have not heard back (I'm sure many of you have been reading between the lines but the archivists have been working on their own to restore the archive without any guidance from the archive owner. We haven't had any news since the public update July 5th). This means we're unable to add any files to the Archive, whether they're new podfics or from the backlog of missing ones.

Thank you to everyone who helped get those 14K files back up, I'll follow up if anything changes in the future.

An update!

Hello everyone!

We're starting to get down to some of the more complex parts of restoring the Audiofic Archive, so here's an update!

So, here is an overview of what's going to happen:

  • Backups (from both physical HDs and cloud-based storage) will be completed.
  • An internal list of all podfic we should have files for will be compared to a list of the files we actually have, generating a 'missing' list.
  • Once we know what is missing, we can crowd source the missing files.

Until we know the extent of the missing files, there is no reason to panic. I personally feel that the missing list isn't going to be very long, and I'm confident that we'll be able to track down copies of the missing podfic, even ones from obscure fandoms, fairly easily.

So please, no panicking.

Keep in mind that this is not going to be a quick process; we have to work within the limits of our hardware, our software, our bandwidth, and the time that volunteers have to work on restoring the Archive.

Thank you for your continued patience during this difficult time. We did not expect the Archive to go down the way it did, and we didn't expect it to take as long to start getting things resolved.

For the most part, podficcers and authors get along pretty well but there have always been the occasional situations where things don't go as smoothly. Maybe an author doesn't get podfic, has been rude or hurtful in their response to a request for permission to podfic. Maybe they asked for something unusual when giving their permission, such as a sample of your podfic, that left you feeling uncomfortable.

Being on the wrong end of those interactions is never fun and a lot of us keep it to ourselves but the problem with that, is that the next podficcer who asks permission might end up in the same situation.

To save other podficcers from the same fate, we'd like to create a list of authors podficcers might want to be careful about. This can be because the author will say no, but it can also be warnings for other things. Like, that an author was hard to deal with, or they that they'll host a copy of your podfic without tell you, etc.

If the author has a public, "no to podfic" somewhere, they can be added to the Blanket No To Podfic List (the sadder sister list to the Blanket Permission to Podfic List that already exists, since it's on Fanlore, anyone can edit the list or you can leave a comment with a link to the statement and we'll add them).

To be clear, this isn't a blacklist, it's a resource for podficcers to they can know an author's history before moving forward on a podfic project. Not everyone listed on this amplificathon post will be a blanket no author, some may even be a blanket yes author. What some people find uncomfortable, others will be fine with, this is more of a heads up post.

I have no idea how to tag or file this, but I figure it might be useful for others to think about.

I just got a notice from mediafire that some of my podfics were suspended because they violated DCMA license stuff. Looking at the body of the email it looks like all sorts of video and audio files that were tagged to a particular show (Kuroshitsuji) were all given this notice. I had two podfics that were not directly tagged with the shows name and they did not receive a suspension.

I know it can be helpful for people to tag their own podfics on mediafire for easier searching/organization but given this it might be useful to attempt to keep the product (TV show/Movie/whatever) out of the title of the podfic and out of tags in case this becomes a more frequent thing, particularly if using mediafire.
