Hello everyone!

We're starting to get down to some of the more complex parts of restoring the Audiofic Archive, so here's an update!

So, here is an overview of what's going to happen:

  • Backups (from both physical HDs and cloud-based storage) will be completed.
  • An internal list of all podfic we should have files for will be compared to a list of the files we actually have, generating a 'missing' list.
  • Once we know what is missing, we can crowd source the missing files.

Until we know the extent of the missing files, there is no reason to panic. I personally feel that the missing list isn't going to be very long, and I'm confident that we'll be able to track down copies of the missing podfic, even ones from obscure fandoms, fairly easily.

So please, no panicking.

Keep in mind that this is not going to be a quick process; we have to work within the limits of our hardware, our software, our bandwidth, and the time that volunteers have to work on restoring the Archive.

Thank you for your continued patience during this difficult time. We did not expect the Archive to go down the way it did, and we didn't expect it to take as long to start getting things resolved.

Thanks for all the work you guys are doing in dealing with this mammoth task! (Not to mention archiving stuff in the first place.)

I'm glad that it's not as dire as I had thought. I thought we were about to try and locate over 20,000 podfic...and while I have pretty much everything in the big Supernatural, Harry Potter, and Doctor Who fandoms, it was still a daunting idea.

I'm going to take down my earlier post on how to get podfic collected. I think the most logical first step for me will just be to test the old posts and offer up a feedback spot for anyone that can't download a podfic.

(In related news, I was going to have to up my DropBox account to business, anyways, which is unlimited storage, so I think I'll start keeping my own backup of the files, just in case. I mean, if I was going to have to get unlimited anyways...might as well be another point of redundancy.)

Audiofic Archive is an institution!

Have you considered geting a patrion account to help pay for this? Or perhaps merging with AO3?

Thank you for the update. It's heartening to hear that you have at least some backups.

Do you have a sense of timescales for this? Are the backups running in the background, or do they require manual inputting? Is there any part of this process that can be automated? Would an injection of funds help speed things up? Podfic fandom isn't small any more and I'm sure at least some of us would be willing to kick in financially.
