busaikko: Something Wicked This Way Comes (* brain)
[personal profile] busaikko posting in [community profile] amplificathon
I had all my apocapodfic recs written out and ready to go, but I don't feel right posting them now, apologies. So instead you get four mini-rec sets of stories I love that mostly don't involve the world ending, written up while doing the deadline limbo. Er.

I listen to audiofic while biking to work or taking my morning (afternoon/evening) walks. I am trying to walk 10,000 steps a day, which requires a lot of audiofic. My main requirement for fic is that it is audible over traffic; I am not bothered by accents or breathing or lines occasionally tripped over, and I love hearing birdcalls or police sirens in the background because I love that feeling of there being another person out there speaking to me and telling me stories I love. When I find a reader I enjoy, I tend to download all of their works in fandoms I know (and occasionally don't know).

I am hideously bad at explaining why I enjoy something, but I hope to inspire more people to rec audiofic now that they know they're not the worst reccer out there!

Alternate Universes:
SGA: Technical Perspective: a civilised discourse in interior design (written/read by penny, 1h17m) m4b | mp3 Penny's reading really brings out the humour in the story, and her delivery of the voices is great at delivering nuances like frustration and yearning.

SGA: Wide Open Ocean (by Setissma, read by winkingstar, 1h03m) m4b | mp3 The audiofic changed my impression of the story, which I had remembered as an aquarium AU; the reading really brings out the atmosphere of isolation and slow despair and sadness in the first half of the story.

Classic Book Fandoms:
A Whimsy of Ficlets (by Sam Storyteller, read by blueyeti, 27m) m4b | mp3 I really liked the way each of these works as separate short stories, each with their own tone. And blueyeti does a wonderful Bunter.

Sherlock Holmes (book): The Lucky One (by Katie Forsythe, read by mific, 40m) m4b | mp3 This fic requires concentration to listen to, because it is a study of characters and relationships, and the reading does a lovely job of moving very naturally between Watson's thoughts and the dialog and action. I adored Lestrade so much, I think mific read him exactly as he is characterised in the story.

Cross-overs:
dueSouth/SGA: Birds of a Feather (by julia here, read by mific, 1h25m) m4b | mp3 Best use of migrating bird calls in audiofic! Also a wonderful evocation of atmosphere; this is a fic that is guaranteed to cool you off, wonderful for the summer heat. What I love about this is that while canon didn't show Rodney McKay as a child, and young!Benton Fraser only had one episode, mific gives them perfect voices, obviously young but appropriate for who they will become.

SG1/SGA: At the Hour When We Are Trembling (by Frostfire, read by blueyeti, 4h35m) m4b | mp3 This was just wonderful, the way the reading brings out the characters of John and Daniel, and the ineffable nature of the relationship between them. The style is also very well suited to the apocalyptic setting. This was a great fic for exercise walking; I kept scheduling more hours of walking just to find out what happened next.

Humor:
SGA: The King of Atlantis (by punk, read by mific, 28m) m4b | mp3 mific is very versitile; here she had me laughing out loud (while walking around the neighbourhood /o\ ) with her delivery. Also has great use of Katamari Damashi theme music and game play action.

SPN: If On A Winter's Night A Fangirl (by trinityofone, read by penny [7pennies] feat. countess & dodificus) m4b | mp3 This fic makes great use of collaboration to bring to life the internet fics, comms, and chats in the original story, and gives a wry, warm voice to the meta and the crack alike.

*hugs* and what a great last minute alternate list! And i especially appreciate you putting the lengths on the stories, bc that's always a central issue for me. Thanks!

I second the rec for "Birds of a Feather" if you haven't listened to that one! I love it.

So very glad you recced The King of Atlantis, that is the funniest piece of cracktasticness I've ever heard, and Birds of A Feather was also brilliant. Thanks for the insightful words...

Did you borrow my player recently? I've listened to almost half of these in the last few months (and liked them, too)! :) Blue_yeti's reading was totally great for "At the Hour...".

There's some tremendously good stuff on here ("Birds of Feather" is way too much fun and wow, bang on description of "At the Hour". I made excuses for that one too.)

I'm really looking forward to listening to the ones I hadn't heard before!

Gosh *blushes*, thanks for all the recs! I remember you saying you were listening to a few fics I'd recorded. Sorry to be slow commenting but we had a monsoon downpour a few days ago and it came in the ceiling of my spare room/computer room. Luckily the computer has survived, thanks to a large fake-banana-leaf umbrella, but it necessitated a major room sort-out (and it's the room where all the clutter ends up when I've shifted it out of the living areas). So very upcheering to be reccd!
