11 Podfics I've Loved in the Last Year
Jul. 26th, 2012 12:12 pmI love podfic. This may be an obvious statement, but given the context I feel it bears repeating. I've posted recs in Amplirecathon in past years and I stand by those, but happily there's been lots of (new-ish) podfic in the last year that I've loved. I can't list all of it here or this post would be miles long. Therefore, without ado, a list of things that have made my day in the last year.
Porn in 5 fandoms
Note: You should be sure to look at contents/warnings/summar/notes whatever on these because if there's one thing I've learned from fandom, it's that many people like many different kinds of porn. Something I enjoy might really not work for you, or something I found adorable and cute you might find to be scorchingly hot, so we can both agree it's good and have different reactions (and vise versa). Of course, half the things I finish reading thinking 'wow, that was incredibly erotic' are podfics I didn't expect to have that reaction to because YKINMK or I wasn't particularly attached to the characters previous to that recording, so there is something to be said for trying new things and being happily surprised.
Podfic: This Night
Reader: Nikojen
link: here
fandom: Tiger & Bunny
Summary: Continuation of episode 13, hurt/comfort, Kotetsu and Barnaby. Rated 18+
Why: There aren't that many Tiger & Bunny podfics out there, but I guess scarcity highlights that which is awesome. This is a fantastic podfic. Nikojen has great reading inflection, a subtle way of infusing emotion through the entire reading (which is to say one of my main reactions was a less coherent "my FEELINGS"). Nikojen also has a lovely way of reading voices, it's clear who's talking at any given moment, which ads to the intimacy of a two-person story like this. This story is rated 18+, but it's really the emotion, and verbal interactions between the characters that are most important, and Nikojen's reading is the perfect highlight for that. It's beautiful.
Podfic: Take this One for the team
Reader: Anonymous
link: here
fandom: Homestuck
Summary:Making a dick joke was a strategic error. You put the subject on the metaphorical table. You're now thinking about troll dick.
Why: I did a massive cull of podfics on my computer because I was running out of space. It was sad, but I never would have had time for all of my previous backlog. My method for going through was a bit random, 1) do I like the fandom, 2) do I like the reader, 3) If I know neither jump to a random point in the middle and see if I like what I hear. For this particular podfic I jumped to 3:11-3:16 "you're now thinking about troll dick" which, for some reason left me spluttering with laughter on the floor. Which is to say, I kept the podfic, and it moved to the top of my to-listen list because I wanted to know what the context was. I am ever so glad I did. Laylah is an amazing writer and Anonymous captures the wry humor of the piece perfectly. I spent the whole podfic grinning, ear to ear. Also it's ridiculously hot. This now counts as another podfic that dragged me into a new fandom. So, even if you too know nothing about Homestuck (or perhaps have heard of it but don't want to become involved in such a long work, and don't know where to go in such a large fandom) I still encourage you to listen to this. It's adorable, and lovely.
Podfic: Experienced
Reader: Sophinisba
link: here
fandom: Merlin
Summary: Porn, Uther takes charge of Merlin's sexual education (underage 17+)
Why: Probably one of the hottest podfics in my collection. I personally wasn't sure based on the summary, if I'd really like this podfic, but it's Sophinisba, and she has a fantastic voice, and I've greatly enjoyed basically all of her work so I gave it a shot. Note that this was also concurrent to the fact that I had an hour train ride in Japan. I am quite glad that I somehow wound up with a traincar to myself (not that I'd actually expect someone to come steal my ipod to see what I was listening to, or that they'd understand given language differences, but). Many of the reviews of this podfic use the words "flithy" or "dirty", which really is a high compliment. It's beyond hot into a whole other level of "oh dear god, I'm just going to sit here and wibble." And have I mentioned how hot Sophinisba's voice is? Right. Okay I should just stop now.
Podfic: The Hunt
Reader: Erica Schall
link: here
fandom: Merlin
Summary: AU verse where Merlin grows up with druids, and there's a festival/ceremony held to bind the druids and Camelot, which, of course, Merlin gets caught up in. Also, delicious porn (NC-17)
Why: Erica Schall has a stunningly beautiful accent. Not only that, her reading is impeccable. Beautiful enunciation, timing, inflection. There are podfics you come across and think "wow, that could be a professional audiobook" this is one of those. Her reading is blindingly hot, and perfectly acted. Her growly Arthur voice may be the best thing. No, really this is just awesome.
Podfic: Get Some (Ink)
Reader: Reena_Jenkins
link: here
fandom: SPN RPS
Summary: Tattoo artist Jensen, assistant Jared (yes, slight underage) NC-17
Why: Another podfic that might lead to incandescent blushing. There are certain podfics that are like eating really good chocolate. You just sort of want to roll around in them luxuriously, but they're auditory so instead you're sitting, rapt, aware that your face may or may not be impersonating a fire truck and feeling very, very glad that you were lucky enough to find fandom in the first place. Actually I have a stack of Reena_Jenkins podfic I'd recommend here (oh my god her XMFC fic, I have no words) but I'm trying to keep my recommendation list succinct so I'm picking this one as my main reaction to listening was "Sorry, cannot compute, brain melted from hotness. Thank you."
Two PG-13 or under podfics
Podfic: Terminus
Reader: Kalakirya
link: here
fandom: Young Wizards
Summary: The snake, eating its own tail; the wayside boundary stone: by what measureless markers should Life be understood?
Why: The reason I started rereading all of the Young Wizards series. Also, a wonderful Tom/Carl podfic (Nita/Kit too!). This is a longer podfic, but riveting. One of those stories than inspires an extra long walk home, just so you have the time to listen to all of it. Kalakirya's reading is clear and well spoken easy to listen to. She doesn't overpower the story, but rather unfurls it before the listener one interesting piece at a time. The story is perfectly in keeping with what I expect from Young Wizards, interesting magic, interesting ideas, wonderful characters. It's a really great listen.
Podfic: An AkiHika Prediction
Reader: Quem Chibati
link: here
fandom: Hikaru no Go
Summary: 1:32 minutes of the predicted (slashy) future of Hikaru no Go.
Why: The most excited, happy reading in the world! This makes grin and want to wave my arms wildly jumping about because of happiness. All the exclamation points!!! Yes!! Actually anyone in Hikago fandom who wants podfic should really go look over at the ihikago comm on LJ. I didn't know about it for a while and that was sad, so I shall share it with the rest of you, awesome challenge, leading to awesome podfic. Go check it out!
Podfics in Two Fandoms I'm Not Part Of/Know Nothing About (so even if you don't know them, you can listen to them too!)
Podfic: Lost at the Edge of the Sun
Reader: RevolutaionaryJo
link: here
fandom: Hawaii 5 0
Summary: Living in Hawai'i is expensive, especially when you're still paying a mortgage on a house back in Jersey. When things get to be too much, Danny has to make a hard decision. The hardest part is keeping the rest of the team from finding out that he's homeless.
Why: I've seen exactly one episode of Hawaii 5-0, but I download basically all podfic ever (or was doing so until I ran out of space on my computer). I'm glad this was one of them. RevolutionaryJo does a great job expressing each characters voice, their frustration or happiness is beautifully clear in the reading. RevolutionaryJo's voice is lovely to listen to, and the recordings audio quality is also great. A wonderfully enjoyable 2 hours.
Podfic: More Certain in Affection
Reader: Luzula
link: here
fandom: Master & Commander
Summary: Undercover in a gay bar, Age of Sail style.
Why: I know nothing about Master & Commander but thoroughly enjoyed this podfic. The reading is engaging and easy to listen to, and long enough to be a great compliment to house chores, or long cooking projects. Utterly entertaining and lovely.
Finally, Fairytales
I love fairytales, I love podfic. It follows I love podfic of fairytales.
Podfic: Ash the Stablehand
Reader: Paraka
link: here
fandom: Cinderella
Summary: A retelling of Cinderella. The story of a stablehand and his cruel stepfamily.
Why: This is a great twist on a fairytale, and a wonderful recording. I particularly love when I find podfic that is so wonderfully universal beyond fandom. Fairytale podfic is good for that generally, but this story particularly is both an excellent reading, and one I'd easily recommend to anyone to listen to, no matter their fannish (or lack thereof) background.
Podfic: The Spring Bride
Reader: Luzula
link: here
fandom: Snow White
Summary: A retelling of Snow White, with a twist.
Why: Another wonderful fairtytale retelling. There's something about fairytales that lends to an oral presentation. Luzula's reading reminds me of a bedtime story, calm, but read with affection for the piece that shows in the quality of the reading (which is, of course, excellent). Again, a podfic I could (and do!) recommend to anyone and everyone.
+Music
Because Homestuck has all the awesome songs and I'm a sucker for fandoms that sing
First off Karkat as sung by cantabileGato:
Ave Mary Am Rewrite of a Pink song, one of the ones I like better than the original, both for great voice acting & singing and just overall awesomeness.
Love Is Blind, Terezi Karkat/Terezi and adorable cuteness to the tune of Taylor Swift.
Past Me, We're Goin' Down, I don't know the original version of this song, but it's certainly fun to sing along with this! AskKarkatVoice is also in this song.
Part of your RomComs The song in which we all <3 Karkat for being adorable
I won't say I feel flushed with actorsAllusion as future Karkat. The Karkats sing about how they aren't talking about having a crush on John (Karkat/John obvs).
Her Condesension as sung by Minicondescne:
the condescension song In which the Condesension is beautifully evil and smirky and sings gorgeously.
The Signless as sung by actorsAllusion:
No Good Deed after starting out cursing the song is a nice adaptation of Wicked to the Signless' situation, not exactly graphically violent but the jesus themes are heavy (and enjoyable).
Pale Rebellion Another religiously vibed song, this time from Prince of Eygypt.
Alone in the Universe with cantabileGato. Karkat and the Signless meet in dream bubbles, it's cute and quite enjoyable to listen to.
Aradia as sung by Broadway Aradia:
Skinny Love Aradia singing to Sollux, sad and sweet.
S0llux Aradia singing about Sollux, this time to Regina Spector's Samson. Again sad and sweet.
Almost There upbeat Broadway tune about becoming Godtier.
