Fantastic Podfics From Underrepresented Fandoms (plus: No knowledge of canon needed!)

The title pretty much explains it all: small-fandom!podfics that can be enjoyed with little to no canon knowledge. :>

Murphy's Law by [livejournal.com profile] ingenius_inc, read by [livejournal.com profile] lunchy_munchy [Viewfinder; Asami Ryuiichi/Takaba Akihito]
This is a fun AU fic based on the manga series, Finder No Hyouteki. I would say that no canon knowledge is required at all to listen and enjoy this piece. Lunchee brings so much energy to this piece, and she reads this with such a bright and lively voice, which I think perfectly captures the main character's narration. Also, she switches her tone perfectly between the serious scenes and the lighthearted parts, which makes it easy to differentiate when the characters are acting and when they are themselves.

Duende by [livejournal.com profile] astolat, read by [livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied [Master and Commander; Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin]
I've never read the books or seen the movie, but this fic kind of makes me want to seek out the original sources (though I think I may be slightly disappointed because my favourite parts of this fic are apparently the AU aspects ;) What do you mean that soul bonding doesn't exist in the source material??). I first heard [livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied read as John Sheppard in And Be One Traveler and thought to myself, "I want listen to her read more!" I've enjoyed [livejournal.com profile] astolat's fic in the past, so I decided on Duende to try out -- I ended up liking this podfic much that I've listened to it three times already. [livejournal.com profile] leviticus_lied has such a smooth and pleasant voice that it's easy to listen to her read for hours on end.

O Captain, My Captain by [livejournal.com profile] novembersmith, read by [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact [Temeraire; William Laurence/Temeraire]
This is another podfic that I chose to try out simply because I've enjoyed the reader's other works. :) [livejournal.com profile] shiningartifact has a slightly hushed and sweet voice, as if she's telling a story just for you. I'm not really familiar with any of the fandoms that she records for, but I've found that I enjoyed most of her recordings regardless, simply because it's so pleasant and relaxing to listen to her read. This particular podfic is no different: I've read only about half of the first Temeraire book, but I think this fic can be enjoyed by anyone with even just a bit of general knowledge about the canon.

Please Hang Up and Try Again by [livejournal.com profile] bookshop & [livejournal.com profile] thehoyden, read by [livejournal.com profile] blueyeti [Dresden Files; Harry Dresden/Johnny Marcone]
I have almost no knowledge at all about the Dresden Files, but I decided to give this podfic a shot anyway -- and boy, was I glad I tried it! (I've listened to this one at least three times as well) A general problem with not knowing anything about the original source of a given fic is that you end up going into the story without any idea of what the characters are like and how they behave. [livejournal.com profile] blueyeti defines the characters using different inflections of her voice and it's immediately clear within the first few minutes that Harry is a hot tempered fellow while Marcone is kind of a smooth operator, which really sets the tone for the rest of the story.

The World is Crumbling All Around Us by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock, read by [livejournal.com profile] aphelant [Macdonald Hall; Bruno Walton/Boots O'Neal]
Macdonald Hall is one of my favourite book series of all time and I was so delighted to find podfic for this teeny fandom (I've...lost track of how many times I've listened and re-listened to this podfic). [livejournal.com profile] aphelant has a perfect voice for storytelling: it's sweet and clear, and she takes care to enunciate each word. She differentiates between Bruno (who is flaily) and Boots (who tries to be reasonable) in a subtle way, changing the inflection and cadence of her voice, which makes the dialogue easy to follow.

Readers I Can Listen To For Hours On End

In order to make this list manageable (otherwise it'd be huge!) and not have any overlap with the list above, I've only included readers that have at least one recording that is over 4 hours long, and I've also tried to keep the fandoms diverse.

Drastically Redefining Protocol by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock, read by [livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo [Merlin; Arthur Pendragon/Merlin Emrys]
[livejournal.com profile] revolutionaryjo is one of my favourite readers for long fics. She has a wonderfully calm and smooth narrative voice that makes it easy to listen to her for hours without tiring (I think I listened to most of Drastically Redefining Protocol in one go). She has a hint of dry amusement in her voice when she reads about Merlin and Arthur's shenanigans, inviting the listener to share in the humour of the characters' situation (ninjas and rape dogs, indeed!).

What Remains by [livejournal.com profile] walkawayslowly, read by [livejournal.com profile] waiting4rain42 [Supernatural; Sam Winchester/Dean Winchester]
What Remains is the first recording of [livejournal.com profile] waiting4rain42 that I've ever listened to, but I'm definitely planning to listen to more of her recordings. Her voice is easy to listen to, never overwhelming the story, but still able to keep the reader engaged. Her reading is steady and clear, and a touch husky, which I think really fits with the atmosphere of the fic.

Conclusions by [livejournal.com profile] bexless, read by [livejournal.com profile] rosekolodny [My Chemical Romance; Frank Iero/Gerard Way]
Conclusions is the only podfic that [livejournal.com profile] rosekolodny recorded (much to my dismay!), but it's terrific and her voice fits tone of the fic perfectly. Her voice is low and slightly husky and lovely to listen to. Actually, this podfic would fit quite well with the previous list since I don't really know anything about bandom at all, but I found the story enjoyable nonetheless -- and [livejournal.com profile] rosekolodny does a wonderful job of telling it.

When You Care Enough to Hit Send by [livejournal.com profile] longsufferingly, read by [livejournal.com profile] juice817 [CW RPS; Jared Padalecki/Jensen Ackles]
I still stand by what I said last year: "[livejournal.com profile] juice817 has a fantastic reading voice -- steady, smooth, and clear." Her voice never overwhelms the story, but she adds just enough inflection to her voice so that it captures and keeps the listener's attention. The When You Care Enough to Hit Send series is one of my favourites to listen to, and it's quite dialogue-heavy, as many of Chash's fics are -- Juice handles the characters' speech perfectly (she pitches her voice lower for Jensen, she speeds up her reading for Jared, she adds a playful lilt to her voice during humorous scenes, and so on).

The Best Things in Life Are Free by [livejournal.com profile] smittywing, read by [livejournal.com profile] celtic_tigress [Stargate Atlantis; John Sheppard/Rodney McKay]
Warning: the fic is complete, but the podfic appears to be an abandoned WiP (I think there's about 5 hours worth of recorded material, which is maybe 50% of the entire fic?). I really enjoy listening to [livejournal.com profile] celtic_tigress's recordings. She reads clearly and steadily, and has a pretty awesome Rodney-voice (a mix of rambly and flaily :>). She recorded Theory of Evolutionary (which is complete and also a 4+ hour podfic, and pretty awesome in its own right), but I wanted to mention The Best Things in Life are Free because it's one of my favourite SGA AUs and [livejournal.com profile] celtic_tigress does a wonderful job of reading it.

And a bonus rec! (this podfic doesn't fit the 4+ hours criteria, but I could happily listen to this fic on loop for hours)

Ordinary Life by [livejournal.com profile] astolat & [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza, read by [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope [Stargate Atlantis; John Sheppard/Rodney McKay]
I adore [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope's voice and also this fic, Ordinary Life (this is what the episode Brainstorm could have been! [/entitled fan]) -- so this combination? Totally win-win for me. :> [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope has a gorgeous, smooth voice. I've listened to all of her recordings at least twice -- I've probably listened to Ordinary Life more than three or four times by now! As an aside, my favourite part of the recording has to be [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope's delightful reader's notes at the end (reader's notes are so much fun to listen to! \o/), where she admits that "spit-slick" is extremely difficult to say without stumbling. ;)

Sorry for the lateness of my post! My podfic-partner-in-crime dropped by (I'm certain it's because she wanted a sneak preview of my rec list) and interrupted my ~progress. ;) Happy listening, everyone! \o/

Yay for wonderful recs and fellow lateness! We shall be the tardy twosome of the seventeenth in future records!1!! :->
I have not d'led Murphy's Law- That sounds like a very fun listen (really, can it be a fun listen as it can be a fun read? I declare it so)
I-am a little bit loopy, I think. More response later.

Your first theme is awesome! I've listened to several of those before, but now I downloaded the last one, because I love Aphelant's reading, and it's good to know that I don't need to know the canon to get the story.

No worries about lateness. It's all good :) And you're now in the master link list (http://community.livejournal.com/amplificathon/871927.html).

Love the first list and will try a story or two there. Duende has always been one of my favorite podfics that gets too little love :)

Thanks for the recs! Your descriptions made me want to try a few podfics I never would have gone for otherwise (because I didn't know much about the fandoms...), including the SGA abandoned WIP...and Ordinary LIfe is excellent, for sure.

Thank you so much for the rec! Couldn't agree with you more about [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope and Ordinary Life too. I'll definitely have to check out many of these.

Your "Underrepresented" group is a great idea! Now you've got me curious about "Please Hang Up..." *goes to download* And I totally agree about "Ordinary Life" and zoetrope as well. :)

N'awwww Bruno&Boots! I read fic before the books, myself; Pru's fics were how I found out about them. I'm so glad you like The World is Crumbling All Around Us, that one was really fun to record, it's one of my favourites! That Bruno, he's such a hoot. <3
