oh god. it's still the 21st somewhere in the world, right??
Introduction:
(Podfic is a way for me to listen to stories I might never read myself, through the emotional lens of a reader who really cares for it. I enjoy this experience thoroughly. All my recs are podfics of stories I have never read [+1 that I have], sometimes in fandoms I'm not in, sometimes in things I have not even seen.
I have done a podcast for each rec, where I flail about about how much about how much I like it and why, and also include little clips of each podfic, which you can stream directly, download individually, or download the whole lot in m4b format. Enjoy!)

Date: 2012-07-23 04:41 am (UTC)Pretty much all my podfic listening is to stories I've never read before, and most of them in fandoms I don't read. I don't actually get to listen to all that much though, and the quantity of podfic has really boomed in the last year (or is that just me?) so there is so much that I miss! (I'm really glad during amplirec people point out older works that I missed out on!) I hope you do like the ones you check out!

Date: 2012-07-22 10:50 pm (UTC)And I really like the emphasis on podfic for fandoms you may not know and for stories you've never read. I really like relistening to a story I liked but I think I like getting introduced to a new story even better. And if I know there is a podfic (or there will be one) I try to wait...
So much yes to Forty-six and two. I was so worried about fail, and then it just stayed careful and compassionate, and fire juggler's reading is great. And thanks for reccing Crinkly's and my podfic. I love BAMF!Arthur, and dream work offers so many false memories, road not taken variations.
Great recs and a great theme! thanks :)

Oh my god, YES. If there is podfic, I am so there! I love how readers bring their interpretation to the table, and with how quick some readers are, the wait sometimes is not very long at all! Mostly though, my podfic habits are all about readers or eye catching summaries. Because I am easy.
Forty-six and two was such a pleasant surprise! I kind of relate TW in my head to more crack than serious business, but the podfic reading and writing was wonderfully enjoyable, even while being quite sombre in nature most of the time. And like I said, inception is not my usual cup of tea, but in combination with who was reading AND the very enticing summary, I was all ears :D It was wonderful work guys, I really enjoyed it!

Date: 2012-07-31 02:37 pm (UTC)And yes, TW tends to be and produce crack, but then we've always been great at changing genres from the source text--romance out of cops and scifi; drama out of comedy and vice versa...the beauty of fandom!!!

Date: 2012-08-02 11:18 am (UTC)Same! Somehow they're more fulfilling for me to make rather than stories that are straightforward prose. It actually feels weird for me not do anything beyond putting in a music intro/outro. Maybe this mean I'm growing as a person/podficcer?!?
we've always been great at changing genres from the source text...the beauty of fandom!!!
We really are! We're also pretty good at exploring the genre and extrapolating from the source text too, I think. I guess fandoms just got everything covered :D

Thank you for giving the podcast a listen, I'm so happy you find it charming! And didn't stop listening! You're awesome.

Date: 2012-07-31 07:36 am (UTC)I am so, so glad you ventured into Glee at the exact moment when I was into Glee! Your reading is of course, utterly charming, and I am very happy to pass my squee about it along to others :D
Your giggles are infectious. INFECTIOUS.

Date: 2012-07-31 07:42 am (UTC)In doing this rec post, I actually discovered something about myself: pretty much all of my preferred readers have smooth, soothing reading styles (pretty much the opposite of how I think of my reading style!! I'm so contrary.) and as such, I am completely unsurprised that you're in the list twice. I love your voice and reading style! It is really great for me :D

Date: 2012-07-29 02:33 pm (UTC)I'm *so glad* you've liked Written By The Victors, and that you've enjoyed it as much as I do. ISN'T IT AWESOME? It was one of my first podfics ever, and now you know why I've been pining for collaborations forever. All the collabs all the time ftw. (In the same train of thoughts, I've been harvesting a deep desire for a similar take being done in Merlin fandom for about as long, ahahah). I disagree with you on being spoiled for the 'true' version of events in this story, and I thought that the read-aloud medium particularly highlighted that: those bits are just another voice, with no less or more power to them. Those Rodney/John POV are just as biased as the rest of them, and give one version, but reality doesn't have a truth, it only has perception, and theirs could be as valid or not as everyone else's. Does that make sense? Like, I loved how the fact that this is all read strips the format even further of "books bits", "other pov bits" and "main bits", and puts everyone's truths on the same footing. There's voices you wouldn't know if they are direct or remote sources until you get to the references! Every time I re-listen to that podfic it's one of the many things that strikes me as brilliant with it.
(I also always just sit there and listen to all the credits go by because I'm so captivated by this world by then, btw. Weee.)
I love your audio recs, and the extracts, and the titles being bits from the podfic itself. Great samples! =D

Date: 2012-07-31 07:58 am (UTC)You make me so aware of this kind of stuff ♥ I will make sure to be better about my header info in the future too ;)
VICTORS IS SO AMAZING *______* Thank you so, so much for reccing it to me!! AH!! AHHHH!! It is everything I never knew I wanted and it was AMAZEBALLS. Is there a Merlin fic you can think of that would take on the collab aspect as well as Victors? Because there are definitely enough podficcers who would be interested in participating in it!
those bits are just another voice, with no less or more power to them
Definitely, but that it is given without opposing character POVs, like Teyla? Or the assassin who McKay intercepts! Gives it more credibility, especially because they are usually placed before/after all the academic accounts. So while I believe all the academics are on the same footing, I don't find it so for the story narrative parts, which takes away some of the mystique for me that was built up by the academic theories. It's still unbelievably brilliant of course, but that's just how I feel. (I'm so happy I am not the only one who listened to the index! XD)
It was really fun to put the extracts together, but it's too bad that my reactions are so ramble-y! I'm pleased you liked it despite that though, thank you bb ♥

Date: 2012-08-11 03:49 pm (UTC)Thank you for giving it a go despite the unfamiliar fandom barrier! It was a lot of work to put together, but it was very satisfying when it was all finished. I'm so glad you liked it \o/
