Author's Summary: This story is set in an alternate future where slavery is legalised and state run. It's grim, angsty stuff dealing with man's inhumanity to his fellow man.

Reader's note: I am an unabashed fan of [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster's A Kept Boy and all of its permutations as an "open AU" (see [livejournal.com profile] whatwekeep) In fact, the 'verse sparked my interest in Supernatural and its stars, along with their attendent usual cast of supporting characters, which make up what most of fandom refers to as "CWRPS."

I had long been resistant to RPS in general, feeling squicked by reading/writing/enjoying fantasies based on very real people. It was the Kept 'Verse that allowed me to rationalize it. The 'verse is so far from the "world as we know it" that it was not a stretch to see the actors as the "cast" of another world, where they play characters that happen to share their names and physical descriptions. The dystopian world of legal slavery in the United States depicted in all of the Kept 'Verse stories falls comfortably far from the Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan that occupy our reality, although their lives are anything but comfortable.

As a fan, and as a nascent podficcer, I was very drawn to the story I'm presenting to you here. <"lj user="trishabooms"/> has written a parallel story to the main plot of "A Kept Boy" that deals with issues and characters important but not central to the main plot, and is developed and engrossing as a story in its own right. Thank you very much for the opportunity, Trisha! And sorry about the wait!

I am a huge fan of everyone that has ever written anything in this 'verse, and also of its (up until now) only podficcer, [livejournal.com profile] superstitiousme, who graciously betaed this reading for me. Her suggestions and comments were invaluable. I am very proud of this work, and give her a great deal of the credit for how it has turned out.
