This podfic is THE comfort podfic for me. I always find myself coming back to it. In part because the writing is so brilliant, but also because [livejournal.com profile] the_oscar_cat's outstanding reading. It's one of the podfics I always keep around on my mp3 player because sometimes I just need to listen to it.

First of all, just by personal preference, I love a British accent in a podfic reader. I don't even care whether the fandom is British or not. In this case, Stargate Atlantis is clearly not, yet it's never jarring. Primarily because [livejournal.com profile] the_oscar_cat has the cadence of speech for the characters down so well. I especially love her John, who drawls in all the right places without being comical, and I can hear his slow smile and laid back nature in her speech. In particular at the end of the first story where he says "Hey, Rodney, you're here."

Her pacing is spot on. All the pauses in the right places and the emphasis is always on just the right word. Sometimes she'll leave you hanging for just a heartbeat after something important is said to let it sink in properly.

The entire thing is a delight and I can't recommend it enough.

I really wanted to rec a whole slew of 'comfort' podfics, but I severely underestimated the time I would have available today to do so. So if anyone out there has anything along that theme they'd like to rec, toss it in the comments! :)

Oh, Nantucket is one of my comfort fics too! Not only are the stories toe-curlingly happy, but [livejournal.com profile] the_oscar_cat's voice is definitely soothing and comfy!

I totally agree. Nantucket really took me by surprise, because it's one of the stories that I somehow didn't fully "get" when I read it (not enough plot, too "pretty" :) and then when I started listening to it and heard the words and the sentences and the sounds...it suddenly became this utterly amazing story for me. I adore the_oscar_cat's reading and this one in particular. It's an amazing series amazingly told, and it's a story I really prefer listening to...again and again :)

I so agree! The part "Threadbare" is one of my favorite SGA podfics ever.

Yes! Nantucket is my ultimate comfort podfic too. It's like taking a deep breath and going somewhere quiet. I have emergency copies of some of the parts on my work computer, just in case.
