Audacity help? (audio blips out)

When I record with Audacity, it blips out periodically ('He walked into the * and turned to Jane, who * "How are *?"'). It does not blip prerecorded material (music tracks), just what I record.

ETA: Thanks, podfic_lover and laurie_ky. Audacity is fixed! *knocks on wood*

HOW TO (i.e., what I did that worked):
1. Clean the drive where Audacity lives, and defrag.
2. Clean and defrag the drive where Audacity stores the temp. files (edit -> preferences -> directories, check the temp. directory location).
** In my case, I moved Audacity and the temp directory off my external drive and onto my laptop, and then cleaned/defraged.
3. Shut down all programs except story and Audacity. Ta-da!
** Laurie also suggests not making files over an hour in size.

I got this problem, when my harddrive was very fragmented and full. Please check beforehand on which drive your temporary recording files are stored (Edit - Preferences - Directories) and then clean up and defragment that harddrive.

I agree with podfic lover. It happened to me once (makes you want to tear your hair out, doesn't it) and since then I shut down all other programs that I can, do disk clean up and defrag before recording. I also try to not record longer than an hour for each Mp3, so if the story takes an hour and 45 minutes, I'll end up with two Mp3s instead of one.

do let us know if the suggestions fixed it! i don't use audacity, but i'm about to try to teach someone to use it, and this is a good quirk to know about.

I'm trying to convince myself to do a thing that's 97 pages in PDF, and imagining reading 97 pages and then going back and fixing one blip every five seconds is like one of those nightmares where you tie your shoelaces, and then tie them again, and again.... So YAY! for people who know more than I do!
