figuring point values for fandoms/pairings (2008 challenge)

fandom points:

• well-archived fandoms - 1 point awarded
  • this includes the top three fandoms in the archive only. they are due south, stargate: atlantis, and supernatural.

• less represented archived fandoms - 2 points awarded
  • any fandom that has stories in the archive as of 3/16/08 earns two points. the list of fandoms is behind the cut at the bottom of this post.

• unrepresented fandoms - 3 points awarded
  • if there isn't a story in the archive already for the fandom you recorded in (or there wasn't when the list was generated), you get three points! yay!

pairing points (we're calling gen a pairing, as well as groupings of more than two characters):

• well-represented pairings - 1 point awarded
  • there's one of these for each fandom. whichever pairing/grouping has the largest number of entries in the archive, that's the one-pointer. the top group in each fandom is bolded in the list behind the cut at the bottom of this post.

• less-represented archived pairings - 2 points awarded
  • anything listed but not bolded!

• unrepresented pairings - 3 pts
  • includes gen and any slash or ship grouping that is not on the list as it stood as of 3/16/08.

how do i do this math? examples:

• an sga mckay/sheppard story would earn 2 points total. one for fandom, one for pairing.
• an sga lorne/parrish story would earn 3 points total. one for fandom, two for pairing.
• an sga lorne/sheppard story would earn 4 points. one for fandom, three for pairing.
• a fullmetal alchemist gen story would earn six points. three for fandom, three for pairing.
• an sga/fullmetal alchemist sheppard/edward elric story would earn seven points. one for sga, three for fma, three for pairing. i don't think this story exists, but if it does, can someone please link me?
• a fullmetal alchemist/m*a*s*h hawkeye/hawkeye story would earn nine points. three for each fandom, three for pairing. i don't think this exists either.

yes, this privileges crossovers. i don't really think that's going to be a problem. the more, the merrier! we are trusting people to get the difference between a crossover and a fusion - none of the challenge mods are going to read/listen to everything to figure it out. if a fusion involves major world-elements (for example, trinityofone's dæmonology universe), you can count it like a crossover. if a story is only borrowing plot or minor elements from a second source, then not so much. when in doubt, guess. and ask your friends. and trust your own judgement. :) six degrees-type fandoms and rpf fandoms count separately from the fandom they are associated with.

So, I've been kind of freaking out about this ever since I heard about it (awesome idea, btw), and I really want to give it a shot, but I have a question first.

There's this one story in the Thursday Next fandom that I really want to do, but the inherent nature of that series is that it is rife with crossovers. From a quick count, I can find...Lord of the Rings, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland, Greek mythology (minor part), the Badger song, and Harry Potter. There are also three major pairings: Thursday/Landen, Frodo/Sam, and Legolas/Gimli.

So, um, how would I total up the points for that?

(Of course, it might all be a moot point. I'm asking for permission from the author right now; heaven only knows what they'll say.)

oh man! that's...potentially the most crossovery crossover ever. hmmm. well, i've read the thursday next books, so i know what you mean about the nature of the series. the story is definitely at least lotr/thursday next. the snow white and alice in wonderland parts feel true to the thursday next books - tn versions - so maybe, maybe not. the badger song seems prominent enough. harry potter is more a mention than a crossover.

okay, i'm going to read it again and do some conferring. i want you to get a bajillion points because this is an awesome story to choose! but i don't want to make the point level impossible for anyone else to hit. you're getting 15 fandom/pairing points at the very least. will get back to you very soon!

yes, absolutely! i just went back and clarified that a bit in the faq.

(yes, that can be weird - one of my stories has been podficced and the reader's emphases are totally different to how i heard them in my head! which tells you a lot about authorial intent, i think. i thought it was weird at first, but then i decided it was cool - it's like a window into the perception of the audience! but...yes. :p)

you gen points for each, because of the nature of a story like this - it breaks down like individual stories, with an overarching premise, but no plot continuity. and yes - we count gen as a pairing once per story.

2 if it's been listed prior - but if it's a crossover, and gen is listed for one fandom but not the other, take the higher value. so you can only take gen once per story, but you can take it for as many points as possible. did you have a particular entry you thought might not be right?

Could I ask some points questions, please? I've recorded some slightly nuttier fics, and have no idea how to sort out the fandom points on them.

Club Night (http://heretoutopia.livejournal.com/28105.html) is a sort of meta-fusion of Discworld, Doctor Who and Torchwood. There's no pairings, but I haven't a clue what to do about points.

For the love of cheese (http://heretoutopia.livejournal.com/37265.html) uses the same kind of 'universe' as the first, and is Torchwood only, but has the pairing Jack/Cheese. Sort of. As does Feeling Blue (http://miss-zedem.livejournal.com/92535.html#cutid1) (not by me - recorded with permission), although that one's got Jack/Ianto as well.

Also, Criminal Minds isn't on this list, but now has a story in the archive - does it now count as 'represented' for 2 points?

last question first, since it's the easiest - the points are figured from the beginning of the challenge, so the values don't change - criminal minds is still a 3 point fandom. :)

i'm really unfamiliar with discworld, but it looks to me like you can probably count all three fandoms for the first - so six fandom points, and since there's no pre-existing gen in discworld, you can count it there, for three points. so nine fandom/pairing points.

for the other two - is the universe made up of major elements of all three? (i have a strong feeling that the answer is yes on this.) if so, then six fandom points for each of those as well. jack/cheese is, of course, a three-point pairing. so 'cheese' is also 9 fandom/pairing points. jack/ianto is a one-point pairing, so if 'feeling blue' is jack/ianto and jack/cheese, then 'blue' is 10 fandom/pairing points.

The fandoms included are House, M.D., Angel, Jeeves & Wooster, Dead Poets Society, Swing Kids, My Best Friend is A Vampire, Much Ado About Nothing, In the Gloaming, Chelsea Walls, Ground Control, Safe Passage, Driven and what not else. (If "what not else" is the problem for specificity, I can get back to you with more details.)

Actually it will be my fourth but I think there´s a little problem in the archive about that. I´ve had one podfic in it before the challenge "Love is a battlefield" and now the two I entered here, "Layers" and "Attachements" but in the archive two fics of those triedunture has made are under my name as a reader ("The Big Blue" and "Detroit Ragtime"). But she has written AND read them.

yep. seems like a paltry number of points, doesn't it? BUT! you will also receive general acclaim, and everyone will be excited about a longform post. what is that, six hours? exciting!

possibly we should give a prize for greatest number of minutes recorded for the challenge! possibly i should do a poll about that. hmmm.

Hmn... it's about 9 minutes for 4 word pages, and it's 146 word pages, so *accesses her crappy Dell's only feature, the calculator [unless you count breaking every two months without fail, that is, parts actually breaking, as a feature.]*

36.5 four-page chunks, so 328.5 minutes, so ~ 5.5 hours. and it usually takes about as much time to records as it does to edit. 11 hour project. You know, I'm starting to get why people think I'm a bit overambitious. But it's my 2nd favorite Dresden fic ever, and absolute favorite for pure Dresden (the other's a DF/Buffy crossover. Which, crazy girl that I am, I may try to do it if I can get this thing knocked out with any amount of time before the deadline.)

it's called Dea ex Machina, Dea Sub Iudcio, and I love it. (The DF/Buffy, that is. I also love Strange Devices, which is the one I'm doing just now.)

I would very, very much support a prize (even if it's just a shiny icon or something like that) for extra-long recordings. Obviously :)

right now I've done... 4 parts? about 15 minutes a pop. so, ya know. only 4.5 hours left. I can totally cover that within the... one, two day window I have before I have to temporarily return my mike to its owner for a while. no worries. did I mention I'm also finishing school and interning ~30 hours a week? I love pressure. I *live* for pressure. *spazzes quietly*


anyway. I'm uber pumped about all this! yay!
