so
malnpudl asked kind of an important question. and seeing how 1/3 of podmod is asleep, and 1/3 is watching lost or something, and i really ought to be focusing on updating the damn archive, i figured i would answer it, speaking for everyone! it's a kind of consensus. for very specific definitions of the term.
mal's question:
At what time on June 2nd will the contest officially end?
my our answer:
midnight in the last place to have a midnight in the world.
okay, this is all subject to revision on account of how the international dateline makes my head hurt, but as a handy reference:
the amplificathon is over at midnight on june 2. the midnight that we are counting as the final possible midnight is the one in american samoa, since there seemed to be one more time zone, but i couldn't find any land there on the map, and i kind of doubt anyone is posting from a ship. (please correct me if you are on a ship and plan to post from GMT-13. or whatever it is.)
when it is midnight june 2 (when the day is about to turn into june 3) in samoa, it is:
11 pm june 3 at the south pole
8 pm june 3 in japan
7 pm june 3 in hong kong
3 pm june 3 in dubai
2 pm june 3 in athens (the one in greece, not georgia)
1 pm june 3 in berlin
noon june 3 in the uk
7 am june 3 us eastern
6 am june 3 us central
5 am june 3 us mountain
4 am june 3 us pacific
1 am june 3 in hawaii
there you go. times are adjusted for places that daylight savings applies.

Date: 2008-05-30 11:47 pm (UTC)Here's a question unrelated to time zones: So if there was only one NCIS story listed, in a pairing I didn't write, at the opening of the challenge, does that mean all the subsequent NCIS stories posted don't affect the "rarity" or point value of the fandom? Like, I'm puttin' up my fourth NCIS story, and while they all have different pairings, it's no longer become a rare fandom for me.
And then just a later, annoying, shut-up-sab, innocent question: maybe next time there should be points for length of fic recorded? Because for me, I much prefer DOWNLOADING longer fics (like, at least 15 minutes) to make it worth my while, and there are tons of like, minute, minute and a half fics up there (including some recorded by me!) which are awesome, but I'd love to incentivize folks to record longer stories. Next time round? /bats lashes

Date: 2008-05-31 12:01 am (UTC)oh, wait, probably i should comment as me to compliments. will do that in a mo'.
point one:
yep. "rarity" is set in stone at the beginning. so never fear.
point two:
dude. oh yes. very much there will be a point value for length, in graduated measures. that was pretty obvious to us even before i posted the poll (and i will be posting about poll results tonight or tomorrow, stay tuned). that said, 1) short fics are valuable as a way in for new readers, and 2) i am very confident (as in, there's evidence) that no one recorded batches of short fics out of poor sportsmanship, but rather out of enthusiasm. if we had begun with a minimum length rule, i think we would have lost quite a number of fics, and i wanted to err on the side of encouraging more, no matter the size.
we were overwhelmingly unwilling to change the rules/points policy in the middle. at least partly because that seemed like it might imply that the mods thought there was hinkiness. which we really don't.
anyway. you are not the first to say it, and i am seeing people say it quite a bit in their own ljs, so. you can be confident that it will happen. (other suggestions are also welcome, via poll, comment, or email to any of the mods or the audmod at gmail account, btw, in case you have anything less diplomatic to say.)
we are planning several anthologies, and one will be a collected podficlets podbook, which should also be helpful to downloaders.

Date: 2008-05-31 12:12 am (UTC)iirc, that job posted as paying in tears, burnt coffee, and a non-osha compliant and potentially injurious amount of one-sided ust.
that said, if it hadn't required reading-level competence in at least two non-natively spoken modern languages, facility with COBOL, MySQL, Debian, STMML, and LaTeX, an up-to-date qualification as a paramedic, a doctorate in engineering (or a closely related field), and a typing speed of 80-90 wpm, i would have been gunning for it. but see, i type a steady 26 wpm. :(
