Podfic Recs 20 January, 2010
Stories that get me in the Emotions
A couple of perhaps-caveats: I haven't been listening to podfic for very long, nor have I listened to very much of it yet (I am a podfic n00b), so my recs will be of some probably well-known stories within the Stargate: Atlantis (SGA) fandom. I also have yet to develop much of a vocabulary for describing what I hear. These stories might serve as a good entrance to the fandom in fact!
I love podfic when I get to listen to it, especially in the car or in an airport (it seems subversively appropriate to listen to BDSM fic in an airport, for example), especially on long walks on sunny days. I love hearing the voices and various accents of fellow fans. Podfic is fantastic from an accessibility perspective: if you have trouble reading, for any reason, you can listen to fic! And it is free, and done out of love.

This is one of my favorite stories read by one of my favorite readers. I recommend anatsuno's podfic generally! This story is, to me, about two people who are at a difficult time in their lives, they have screwed up, their careers are in jeopardy, they are alone, and now they are finding some comfort in each other. The loneliness and fear of the future are real, and yet, here they are holding on to one another. There is grace in this moment. There are a few lines that get me every time, including the fantastic exchange about puppets. Anatsuno's delivery makes this story even better in audio than it is in text, infusing it with emotion. This is the podfic I have listened to the most times.

An amnesia story in which Rodney loses his memories and asks John to tell him about their past. It is about what John and Rodney want to be true, and what is true, and the things they can and cannot say to one another. It is heartbreaking and awesome. I find countess' voice and reading to be restful and easy to listen to, almost meditative-- it pulls me in and makes me want to listen more. There is a little bit of background noise in this recording; I admit that background noise does not typically bother me that much but your mileage will certainly vary.

Fandom SGA, Pairing McKay/Sheppard. Adult, but not what I would call explicit.
This story is a fandom favorite, a romantic comedy AU where Rodney is a professor and John runs the titular Junk Shop. They live in the same falling-apart building along with some adorable neighbors. Unlike most romantic comedies, however, this one keeps on going after John and Rodney get together. It is a warm and fuzzy story that I like to listen to when I need some warm and fuzzy feelings in my life. There is bug-killing, dinner with the neighbors, consumption of baked goods, and other domestic goodness, along with some amusing awkward conversations. Zoetrope is a fantastic reader, another person I simply like listening to.

This is a series of stories, I am actually not sure if they are supposed to be all interconnected into a some kind of obscure arc or not (I just listen and enjoy!), labeled as days of the month in March. This is another go-to-happy-place fic for me, very comforting to listen to. There are stories with awesome kink and stories with deep emotion (even at the same time), and hilarious stories, and overall it's a must-listen of the podfic world. The different days make for easy break points (and, in fact, you can download and listen to them separately if you are so inclined). "Tabled" is my favorite because anatsuno uses an ingenious effect to create the "voice" of some ancient technology. "Fisting" is another one I like because it involves reluctance-and-then-enjoyment of kink, which I think is interesting to observe. I also got the impression, listening to all of these together, of a sense of range for both the reader and the author.

I am listening to "Fair Trade" right now to refresh my memory, and noticing a hum in the background, which is bothering me in my quiet apartment when it did not bother me outdoors, where there was ambient noise anyway. I am reccing this podfic anyway because I really loved wihluta's reading, and I listened to this fic without reading it first, which is unusual for me and probably made me love the story more. I found this story very emotionally satisfying, especially the first two in the series, "Fair Trade" and "Moebius", and they together present perhaps the best representation of living with chronic pain and disability that I have seen in fandom. John is running a coffee shop, Rodney is working as a museum exhibit designer, and they are slowly courting each other. John has an injury in his leg that gives him chronic pain and makes stairs difficult, though he can bike. Ronon and Teyla are present in the story as John's surgeon and therapist. There is also something really lovely about hearing about all of the kinds of coffee; I could almost smell it as I listened. There is something careful about this story: slow, safe, done with great care and great love.

Date: 2010-01-23 12:10 am (UTC)I've just started the Fair Trade series and my coffee intake has gone up alarmingly. I blame you. :)
Group W Bench and Junk Cheap are two that I also find I keep coming back to, in different ways, they're both comforting and classic.
I can't wait to check out the others you suggested.
