I have an audiofic, but I have been unable to reach the author to ask permission. she has not been on her account for a few months.

Is it not true, that you would wish me to wait to submit the podfic until I can reach the author and confirm that she grants permission?

In order for the Audiofic Archive to archive a podfic, the author needs to have granted permission. You can of course do whatever you like and record it without permission, but we can't archive it for you, and because one of the stipulations in the challenge's FAQ is that you grant permission to archive for a minimum of 6 months, you won't be able to use that podfic in this challenge because we can't archive it.
