I'd like to clarify that this is in no way an attack on fanlore, the editors, users or gardeners there. This is my response to the conversations going on at the fail fandom anon meme (ETA: Don't read this unless you're feeling really thick skinned)
If you would like further information on what prompted the anon meme thread, Paraka has described the issues with fanlore much better than I in her post Podfic Entries On Fanlore

Date: 2012-09-24 02:23 am (UTC)And I'd also *not* recommended wading into that horrible, horrible thread, people keep throwing out the same old fears, that imo are totally unrealistic. Podficcers credit the author in their posts, at the archive, in the *podfic itself*, like, they credit the author over *themselves* sometimes. NO ONE IS OUT TO STEAL CREDIT FROM POOR INNOCENT AUTHORS.

Date: 2012-09-24 03:16 am (UTC)the literal voice of reason...
Date: 2012-09-24 04:55 am (UTC)Anyway, I love that you, as a podficcer, chose to make your point by using your voice and not writing a post. Plus, it gave me another opportunity to listen to you - something that I have done, on some days, as many hours as I can manage it. ;) Thanks so much!

Date: 2012-09-24 05:11 am (UTC)And, yes, podfics are valid fanworks. My god, it's obvious.
Right? *So* obvious:/ And so are translations and mixes and art and gif sets and vids and crocheted tardises and master lists and rec sets and meta and love memes and ALL THE THINGS.
Some podfic I love more than I loved the original fic...others, the fic is still my favorite...but they are all individual works.
Me too. It's very rare when I'll have the exact same reaction to both the fic and the podfic.
and you've encouraged me to listen to things I wouldn't have without your involvement.
I could kiss you, this is the best thing you could have said<3

Date: 2012-09-24 11:39 am (UTC)Podfic has made a huge difference in my life. I am a voracious reader. I tear through my fandoms daily, and often find myself at the end of the internet when it comes to my favorite pairings. Podfic has not taken away from my reading, but it has added quite a bit to it. I now am able to listen to fanwork on my way to work and home every day (more than an hour a day), and I choose to spend that time in my fandoms with my favorite podficcers. Additionally, I must point out that my absolutely favorite podfic is of a story that I read first, was not terribly impressed by (it read a little flat to me), but downloaded anyway when it was podficced. When this particular story was podficced, the reader's voice is what it needed to become something more than just words on a page. It became a piece of art that transformed into one of the best pieces of work out there. It is now the podfic that I judge all other podfics by.
And I won't even get into here those who are in fandom who might need podficcers to really be able to enjoy works all together. Whether it's due to a learning disability that makes reading uncomfortable, or if it's someone like the woman who I worked for in collage, who paid me to read books into a tape recorder (we won't discuss my age, thanks) so that she wouldn't have to struggle with two sets of glasses to correct her vision enough just to see the book.
People are stupid. You guys are awesome, and if I could get my lazy ass up and going, I would join you all as a podficcer and help get more of it out there. Thanks for this.

Date: 2012-09-24 11:41 pm (UTC)I've done this as well, especially with a particular reader who records her own work, I always wait for the podfic to come out because it just turns the story into something else entirely. It's amazing.

I would *love* to know what this is by the way:D Podfic recs are always welcome!

Date: 2012-09-26 11:31 am (UTC)However! There are so many amazing pieces of work out there! Names that I know and will download just because of the person who reads it. Reena Jenkins is one of those. If she enjoys the work enough to read it, I'm probably going to enjoy it, as well. I feel similarly about Juice 817.
I check my comms each night looking for new stuff, and hoping to see familiar names and fandoms so that I have new stuff to read!

Date: 2012-09-24 12:36 pm (UTC)I regret that I read that FFA thread--I mean, I should know better, but someone linked me and I clicked (not from here, btw) and it just got me down. /o\ But you have cheered me up again. ♥

Date: 2012-09-24 11:45 pm (UTC)I think that the podficcing community is *so* welcoming and *so* positive that it's just that much harder to step outside that bubble and see what the rest of fandom can be like.

Date: 2012-09-24 10:40 pm (UTC)Anyway, the point of leaving this comment was to say THANK YOU for posting this and catching me up, and I love your choice of media for doing so. Also, I didn't see you on the podfic love meme, but I adore your voice and have listened to several of your podfics in various fandoms. I especially love Adorned and your work on Untune the Sky. I have been remiss about leaving feedback for all the wonderful podficcers who have brought me such joy, and I'm taking this opportunity to begin changing that. I'm a lurkey lurker by nature, and I tend to listen to podfic on trips when I have no computer access for weeks, and I don't podfic myself so I feel like I don't have any of the right words to say what it is I love so much about each piece. But what the hell, it's not the end of the world if I leave some cheesy YOU ARE SO AWESOME comments. Better than letting the negative voices be the only ones heard by podficcers. So, yeah, this like-minded loser thinks you are so awesome. ♥

Date: 2012-09-24 11:52 pm (UTC)It seems really strange for fannish people to be so judgemental about playing in each other's universes, isn't that the whole *point* of fandom? Eh, I'm baffled too:/

Date: 2012-09-24 11:10 pm (UTC)Uh, fandom would not exist without someone else's words/ideas/etc, so I'm not sure what holy ground these people think they are standing on.
Also, "anyone can do it?" Really? Have they tried? Because I tried
and my podfics sound like shit. It's not easy. It's a hell of a lot easier for me to write a fic than it is to record words and then edit and put in sound effects (which I would have to do if I were recording podfic) or music or whatever.Um, apparently you got me all riled up. I just totally agree with what you have to say. You win, bb. We should be here to encourage each other, not rip each other apart.

Date: 2012-09-30 11:08 pm (UTC)I wish that I could control my curiosity better, then I too could have not clicked on the FFA link. I *know* that reading stuff over there about things that matter to me will only lead to frustration and hurt on my part but I still do it:/
But yay that you got something out of this? I feel alternately proud that I was brave enough to post something and disappointed that I am incapable of speaking on the fly with a little bit more polish.
