I'd like to clarify that this is in no way an attack on fanlore, the editors, users or gardeners there. This is my response to the conversations going on at the fail fandom anon meme (ETA: Don't read this unless you're feeling really thick skinned)

If you would like further information on what prompted the anon meme thread, Paraka has described the issues with fanlore much better than I in her post Podfic Entries On Fanlore

I'd also like to add that the FFA anons were reacting to my discussion with Fanlore, but they completely misinterpreted what it was I was doing/asking for. In case anyone goes to read what was said there (which I really don't suggest people do, because it's mostly hurtful towards podfic and isn't that great of a conversation, IMO).

Oh, I'm so glad you posted that here! And it links to Paraka's post (which is much better--and better for me :) than the FFA one...

+1 to everything you said. I'm not a podficcer, but I really just don't get what is wrong with people. I really, really don't.

It's hard, isn't it, but good for you for making the effort to be the literal voice of reason in a crazy situation. And, yes, podfics are valid fanworks. My god, it's obvious. I have certain podficcers whose voices I adore - others, not so much. Some podfic I love more than I loved the original fic...others, the fic is still my favorite...but they are all individual works. (You are on the adore list, btw - I have more podfic read by you than anyone else, and you've encouraged me to listen to things I wouldn't have without your involvement.) The arguments that arise and that are made are just...WHY DO THEY CARE?! WHY DO THEY CARE about someone else's fandom/fannish experience?! Live and let live. Who are they to say what is a valid fanwork?! Seriously. It's this type of thinking that has totally screwed up THE WORLD. *sigh* Live and let live, people...it's not that hard.

Anyway, I love that you, as a podficcer, chose to make your point by using your voice and not writing a post. Plus, it gave me another opportunity to listen to you - something that I have done, on some days, as many hours as I can manage it. ;) Thanks so much!

This comment encompases everything I feel about this issue. I hope someone over at fanlore figures that out as well.

This is incredible. I must stand up and identify myself as a like-minded loser, here, because I'm going to have to disagree with the people who started this stuff at fanlore.

Podfic has made a huge difference in my life. I am a voracious reader. I tear through my fandoms daily, and often find myself at the end of the internet when it comes to my favorite pairings. Podfic has not taken away from my reading, but it has added quite a bit to it. I now am able to listen to fanwork on my way to work and home every day (more than an hour a day), and I choose to spend that time in my fandoms with my favorite podficcers. Additionally, I must point out that my absolutely favorite podfic is of a story that I read first, was not terribly impressed by (it read a little flat to me), but downloaded anyway when it was podficced. When this particular story was podficced, the reader's voice is what it needed to become something more than just words on a page. It became a piece of art that transformed into one of the best pieces of work out there. It is now the podfic that I judge all other podfics by.

And I won't even get into here those who are in fandom who might need podficcers to really be able to enjoy works all together. Whether it's due to a learning disability that makes reading uncomfortable, or if it's someone like the woman who I worked for in collage, who paid me to read books into a tape recorder (we won't discuss my age, thanks) so that she wouldn't have to struggle with two sets of glasses to correct her vision enough just to see the book.

People are stupid. You guys are awesome, and if I could get my lazy ass up and going, I would join you all as a podficcer and help get more of it out there. Thanks for this.

I wish I could tell you, but the reader took it down YEARS ago and asked that it not be shared, so I have it saved in several places so that I will never lose it, and I just sigh at her occasionally about how much I adore it. She says thank you each time, laughs, and goes on.

However! There are so many amazing pieces of work out there! Names that I know and will download just because of the person who reads it. Reena Jenkins is one of those. If she enjoys the work enough to read it, I'm probably going to enjoy it, as well. I feel similarly about Juice 817.

I check my comms each night looking for new stuff, and hoping to see familiar names and fandoms so that I have new stuff to read!

Yes! ♥ I love that you recorded this instead of writing it down.

I regret that I read that FFA thread--I mean, I should know better, but someone linked me and I clicked (not from here, btw) and it just got me down. /o\ But you have cheered me up again. ♥

Thank you for this! I haven't yet dared to klick on the link but from the things you address in your voice post I would probably get totally mad at the comments. I hadn't even realized those things were an issue any longer as I feel rather at home in our little podficcers niche we've created for ourselves. I do understand that we are a relatively small portion of fandom but that doesn't mean our fannish creations are worth any less.

Okay, I usually just completely ignore wank on the internet because I get plenty of stupid in my every day life and do my best to avoid it at home, so I am a week behind in the outrage. Wwhat is WRONG with people?? I don't understand any of their arguments. But the one that went it doesn't count because it exist without someone else's words is especially insane. Because, hello, your fanfic, it would not exist without someone elses' characters. *shakes head in bafflement*

Anyway, the point of leaving this comment was to say THANK YOU for posting this and catching me up, and I love your choice of media for doing so. Also, I didn't see you on the podfic love meme, but I adore your voice and have listened to several of your podfics in various fandoms. I especially love Adorned and your work on Untune the Sky. I have been remiss about leaving feedback for all the wonderful podficcers who have brought me such joy, and I'm taking this opportunity to begin changing that. I'm a lurkey lurker by nature, and I tend to listen to podfic on trips when I have no computer access for weeks, and I don't podfic myself so I feel like I don't have any of the right words to say what it is I love so much about each piece. But what the hell, it's not the end of the world if I leave some cheesy YOU ARE SO AWESOME comments. Better than letting the negative voices be the only ones heard by podficcers. So, yeah, this like-minded loser thinks you are so awesome. ♥

Wow. This brought tears to my eyes.

Uh, fandom would not exist without someone else's words/ideas/etc, so I'm not sure what holy ground these people think they are standing on.

Also, "anyone can do it?" Really? Have they tried? Because I tried and my podfics sound like shit. It's not easy. It's a hell of a lot easier for me to write a fic than it is to record words and then edit and put in sound effects (which I would have to do if I were recording podfic) or music or whatever.

Um, apparently you got me all riled up. I just totally agree with what you have to say. You win, bb. We should be here to encourage each other, not rip each other apart.

I really enjoyed listening to your points. I especially agree about how it doesn't do us any good to police what is and isn't a valid fanwork, because we get enough of that from outside fandom.

I laughed out loud at your comment about the heater coming on during podfics, because I have the same problem!

The link to this is making the rounds on tumblr again today and I'm glad it is because the first time around I didn't have a chance to sit down and listen to it, but I did now. So I did. And I'm so happy I did. This is something I often want to shout from the rooftops, that policing what counts as a valid fanwork is totally ridiculous. I haven't been to the FFA thread and I won't touch it with a ten foot pole, but thank you for making this as a response.

Tumblr is an excellent linkspam engine, if nothing else. Sharing things there is a lot like retweeting. So I've seen it come up a few times from several people I follow. And well deservedly so, too. :)
