Summary: Alys and Simon grow closer over the years

This story is my favorite Alys/Simon story because philomytha deftly shows the development of their relationship from a somewhat wary, purely professional one, to the deep trust that comes of being competent and dependable colleagues for years, to the gradual development of intimacy. I like that they're colleagues first, and then friends, and that their attraction develops out of being capable in their respective spheres of protecting the Emperor's security with intelligence and with social politics. Romantic attraction at first sight is all good and well, but this story, where romantic attraction comes much later, after the leading players have come to thoroughly know each other in all the other ways that count, is less frequently told, and all the more captivating for its rarity.
