Date: 2011-05-29 08:41 am (UTC)Would you like a podbook?

Date: 2011-05-29 08:46 am (UTC)I did try to look up the difference between podfics and podbooks, but I haven't managed to find anything simplistic enough for me to understand. If you can direct me to a 'terminology for dummies' page, I'd be very grateful (and better able to answer the question!)

Date: 2011-05-29 09:31 am (UTC)1) They have cover art. Well, okay, they don't *need* cover art, you can compile one without it, but standard convention in podfic fandom is that podbooks have cover art. Some podficcers also provide cover art with the MP3s, but many do not.
2) They are automatically filed under the "Books" section of iTunes and "Audiobooks" section of an iPod. This keeps them separate, stops them from being played in music shuffle mode (so you can rest easy, knowing that, at your next party, when you plug your iPod into your speaker system and hit "Shuffle", your friends and family won't be regaled with you reading gay porn!), and generally makes it easier to browse though your podfic library (by keeping it separate from your music library).
3) They remember your place. If you pause an audiobook and then put something else on, then go back to the audiobook later, it will automatically remember your place. It's very much like placing a bookmark in a book. Additionally, many have chapter markers, so you can easily navigate a longer story (like this one).
Another, smaller thing that sometimes contributes to why a LOT of people prefer podbooks, is that they're often (but not always) smaller file sizes than the MP3s, so they take up less space on your computer & iPod (or MP3 player). I know this can sometimes be an issue for, say, people with smaller players, like an 8 GB iPod Touch or iPhone.
If any of this is still confusing,

Date: 2011-05-29 09:46 am (UTC)I had read cybel's post, but until you put into terms of gay porn making an unscheduled party appearance, the difference hadn't really sunk in :D
That sounds like a really good idea, I will sort out some cover art - are there any specific criteria, in terms of image size? Sorry to be asking you more questions!

Date: 2011-05-29 09:59 am (UTC)I already found this post (http://flatmate.tistory.com/4)--I assume it's fine to use that?

Date: 2011-05-29 10:11 am (UTC)Yes, that's fine... so, I don't need to do anything? I am liking this plan :D

Date: 2011-05-29 10:39 am (UTC)Also, if you've gotten your second cup of tea...*g*
If you'd like to jump into the fray of the Amplificathon contest, you would, by my calculations, get 117 points (5 for posting + 10 for your first podfic + 96 for length + 3 for fandom + 3 for pairing), which, for the record, is more points than *I* have racked up with 5 podfics over nearly 2 months of posting!

Date: 2011-05-29 10:48 am (UTC)(no subject)
Date: 2011-05-29 11:16 am (UTC)Points: 5 + 10 + 96 + (3 + 3) + 0 = 117
To learn more about Amplificathon, check out this post (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/896194.html). This one (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/896638.html) will explain the points system to you.
Welcome to the podfic community! ;) Podbook should be up in the next 10 minutes; it's just uploading to SendSpace now.

Date: 2011-05-29 11:37 am (UTC)Thank you so much, both for doing the podbook and for all your help, I feel much wiser without having got more than a couple of hours older, which makes a nice change :D

Date: 2011-05-29 10:26 am (UTC)elemgi told me I should post here, and I was all 'No, that's just for proper podficcy people, not amateurs like me' and nervous about it, and now I have a tag and bessyboo is doing a podbook thingy. Bloody hell.
Think I'm going to need another cup of tea to cope with this level of excitement.
Thank you very much indeed :D

Date: 2011-05-29 02:39 pm (UTC)Breathe deeply! We don't want you passing out when Dodie gets here to archive your files at the Audiofic Archive!
Everyone was a nervous amateur when they first posted, after all. Though few of the newbies started with a 10+ hour podfic as you have. ;-)

Date: 2011-05-29 02:52 pm (UTC)And if there's going to be archiving, I may need to break out the Earl Grey...

Date: 2011-05-29 10:25 am (UTC)I love your story very much and hoped someone would record it. But being able to listen to the author's version is always a special treat.
(no subject)
Date: 2011-05-29 10:36 am (UTC)It's a bit of a toss up with the author / experienced reader thing - on the one hand, I kind of wanted to do it (fantastic editing tool) and I certainly know the story better than anyone else would ever want to, but there were times when I was afraid I'd bitten off more than I could chew and wished I'd left it to the experts.
Had a lot of fun though, I hope you enjoy it!

Date: 2011-05-29 10:59 am (UTC)But it's the same as with writing fanfic: The more you do it, the better you get and the more at ease you are.
If you would like to have concrete feedback before you post, you could use a beta-listener. Even seasoned podficers use them to be sure they edited all errors out. I for example read once Diary Queen instead of Dairy Queen. :)

Date: 2011-05-29 11:10 am (UTC)It happens to EVERYONE ;)

Date: 2011-05-29 11:16 am (UTC)My friend staceuo who mastered it for me listened also, so hopefully errors were picked up - it was mostly a case of cutting out the bits where I suddenly interrupted the broadcast in order to yell profanity at tractors rumbling past my house, or the bloody birds making a racket outside my window. Nothing I could do about them, unfortunately - my husband didn't seem to notice the sudden appearance of a microphone, but I'm pretty sure he would have spotted an air rifle.

Hmm... is there a 'comm of the year' award? There really should be!

Date: 2011-05-30 06:41 am (UTC)Have a gold star and a Blue Peter badge... OK, that probably means nothing to you, but if you'd grown up in England in the 80s, you'd know that was the equivalent to a year's supply of chocolate and having Gary Numan meet you at the school gates :D

Date: 2011-07-16 06:25 am (UTC)It was my first, but I had a lot of help - my friend Stace is in the music business and she put the files through some compressor thing, which made them sound much better.
I'm going to be floating around on a cloud today after this - thank you!

Date: 2012-01-30 09:20 pm (UTC)Also have to compliment your choice of music. Jack L is the perfect choice, and I love how you've matched the lyrics that place up so they'll fit well with the chapter's ending.
Thank you!

Date: 2012-01-30 10:44 pm (UTC)Thanks too for the comment re the music - I had SO much fun matching the lyrics to the chapters, even though I thought no one would notice, very glad to be proved wrong :D
