Holy crap, I am impressed. That's a LOT of podfic!

Would you like a podbook?

Basically, they do three main things:

1) They have cover art. Well, okay, they don't *need* cover art, you can compile one without it, but standard convention in podfic fandom is that podbooks have cover art. Some podficcers also provide cover art with the MP3s, but many do not.

2) They are automatically filed under the "Books" section of iTunes and "Audiobooks" section of an iPod. This keeps them separate, stops them from being played in music shuffle mode (so you can rest easy, knowing that, at your next party, when you plug your iPod into your speaker system and hit "Shuffle", your friends and family won't be regaled with you reading gay porn!), and generally makes it easier to browse though your podfic library (by keeping it separate from your music library).

3) They remember your place. If you pause an audiobook and then put something else on, then go back to the audiobook later, it will automatically remember your place. It's very much like placing a bookmark in a book. Additionally, many have chapter markers, so you can easily navigate a longer story (like this one).

Another, smaller thing that sometimes contributes to why a LOT of people prefer podbooks, is that they're often (but not always) smaller file sizes than the MP3s, so they take up less space on your computer & iPod (or MP3 player). I know this can sometimes be an issue for, say, people with smaller players, like an 8 GB iPod Touch or iPhone.

If any of this is still confusing, [livejournal.com profile] cybel has a lovely post here (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/617674.html) explaining many of the same things :) Let me know if there's any other questions you have.

Oh, I'll take care of the cover art--that's part of the podbook compilation ;)

I already found this post (http://flatmate.tistory.com/4)--I assume it's fine to use that?

Nope! You've already done the hard part with recording the bloody thing! ;)

Also, if you've gotten your second cup of tea...*g*

If you'd like to jump into the fray of the Amplificathon contest, you would, by my calculations, get 117 points (5 for posting + 10 for your first podfic + 96 for length + 3 for fandom + 3 for pairing), which, for the record, is more points than *I* have racked up with 5 podfics over nearly 2 months of posting!

Indeed! To claim your rightful spot in the, er, Top 20? Just edit this into the bottom of your post:

Points: 5 + 10 + 96 + (3 + 3) + 0 = 117

To learn more about Amplificathon, check out this post (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/896194.html). This one (http://amplificathon.livejournal.com/896638.html) will explain the points system to you.

Welcome to the podfic community! ;) Podbook should be up in the next 10 minutes; it's just uploading to SendSpace now.

LOL!

Breathe deeply! We don't want you passing out when Dodie gets here to archive your files at the Audiofic Archive!

Everyone was a nervous amateur when they first posted, after all. Though few of the newbies started with a 10+ hour podfic as you have. ;-)

Definitely archiving! Amplificathon is moderated by jinjurly, who IS the archive, so everything posted here is archived automatically; it's even in the comm profile.

Oh, thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] verityburns!

I love your story very much and hoped someone would record it. But being able to listen to the author's version is always a special treat.

Believe me, every podficer started out as concerned as you: the voice, the accent, the understanding of the story, the right pronunciations ....

But it's the same as with writing fanfic: The more you do it, the better you get and the more at ease you are.

If you would like to have concrete feedback before you post, you could use a beta-listener. Even seasoned podficers use them to be sure they edited all errors out. I for example read once Diary Queen instead of Dairy Queen. :)

True story: while beta-listening to [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins's Podfic Big Bang, I caught that she accidentally changed the TITLE of one of the stories in the series when reading it! And that's REENA, who posts here EVERY DAMN DAY and is in 1st place for points in the contest right now!

It happens to EVERYONE ;)

Ooh, I adore when longfic is posted.

I'm very much looking forward to listening to this, and welcome to podficcing! What an accomplishment for your first foray in. I'm really glad you decided to post here or I might have missed this. :)

God, you have no idea how awesome this recording was. Was this your first podfic? It was brilliant, I didn't want it to be over! There was not one single stumble or editing snafu, I loved your voice, your accent your writing. You had me laughing out loud at some parts and all tensed up with sympathetic misery at others.

I can't tell you how much I loved it<3

LOL. I'm far from experienced (you've probably now recorded more cumulative hours than I have, and I've only been podficcing for about 4 months). I am an experienced listener though :) I finished it today, and it was just wonderful. It is definitely going on my to-listen-to-again list. The music was especially well incorporated. It wasn't intrusive at all, it all just flowed. I dearly hope you do more :)

I enjoyed this a lot. Being sick and mostly just lying around on the sofa at the moment, I listened to it in almost one go; couldn't have stopped if I tried in the end anyway. I am particularly impressed with your Sherlock, both the way you wrote and read him. You did a really great job with this (pod)fic!

I've been listening to this podfic every free minute I've had over the past few days. I'm new to the Sherlock fandom, and I'm glad I found this podfic so quickly because it's really fantastic. Your writing is stunning, I adore your characters. They're both perfectly in character. Your reading is great too. You're so expressive, and your accent is lovely.

Also have to compliment your choice of music. Jack L is the perfect choice, and I love how you've matched the lyrics that place up so they'll fit well with the chapter's ending.

Thank you!
