I just finished listening to this last night -- well, I had meant to *start* listening, but then I kept on until I had finished in the wee hours of the morning o_O; so as you can guess from that, I really enjoyed it! The story was captivating, (although, wow, it's like at least 50% porn :D) and I was very happy with your reading -- you seemed really into it without your voice getting *too* animated; and your speed and enunciation made it very easy to follow, for which (as a non-native speaker) I was especially grateful. I noticed some cuts and differences between takes, but they weren't distracting at all -- I was actually quite impressed with the overall cohesion of the piece. Anyway, thank you for this massive work of love! I hope you had fun recording it.
Oh, podfic is a total labor of love for me (as is porn, lol). I try to put myself into the story, which usually isn't much of a problem since I only read stories that I absolutely loved myself. Anyway, I very much appreciate you letting me know that you liked it. Feedback for podfic is pretty thin on the ground, especially comments as detailed and lovely as this one. Thank you so much!
It occurs to me I forgot to mention one tidbit, namely the use of music! I was a bit skeptical at first with the song at the intro -- not that it deterred me from listening at all, more like "huh, music, okay" -- but in the end I loved how you used it as a bracket for the reading. The fic ends on a such a high note (even though, lol, the gorgeous cover art is SUCH A SPOILER), and the song beautifully enhances that feeling of elation (even though it's not precisely my kind of music, I went "aw, yeah!", bopping along :D). That was seriously nifty.
Opinions vary on music. Some people find it distracting, but I usually like to include it with the longer readings if I can find something that seems to fit. And I haven't even seen the cover...I'm assuming it came from the original Big Bang art? Anyway, I'm certainly glad to know the music worked--it's used in another recording I did, "Beautiful Disaster" by TheNyxie, and I love it--because fitting it in smoothly can be kind of tricky. Thank you!
Oh, Wow! Thank You! I have a huge grin on my face, :D I love this story!- From one of my favorite writers. And you are one of my favorite readers *does little dance of joy* Off to listen! :)
OMG OMG OMG, I was seriously thinking, like, LAST WEEK, that this story should be podficced, and lo, I seem to have willed it into creation with my wishful thinking, and IT WAS GOOD :D *downloads* I seriously cannot WAIT to listen! *bounces happily*
I enjoyed the story when it came out, but your reading definitely moved it into the love territory. You really bring out the animosities and the stress and the high energy and your Jensen and Jared are great!
You could be a professional reader! This is probably one of the best podfics I've ever heard. Great story, crystal clear recording, perfect pacing and characterization, NICE voice... *in awe* Thank you! I'll have to check out more of your work.
Such lovely feedback! Thank you! I actually have been trying to become a professional reader, but it's a highly competitive industry, very difficult to break into, which makes your very kind words doubly appreciated.
i've been meaning to drop a comment on your journal for quite some time now, but time is kinda limited lately. i just wanna express how much i love this podfic of yours. your voice! darn it, your voice!
to be honest, i don't do podfic in fear of the reader messing the whole tone i've set up in my mind up, and to be honest, so far, i've only liked 3 podfic readers. and one of them is you. seriously, the emotions in this fic is clearly conveyed in the tone of your voice, and i just bawled like mad as you read on near to the end where Jared was just being a stupid fool who can't get his head outta his ass. omg, that was epic! everything was just perfect! udejwbfqhreu goddammit perfect.
my favourite fic + one of my favourite podfic readers=happiness.
Oh, wow, I'm...overwhelmed. Really. Thank you so much!
Hmm, I feel like I'm making an Academy Award speech or something...but first let me say that I know EXACTLY what you mean about readers. Like authors of fanfic, readers vary widely in skill, and a reader who appeals to one listener will turn off another. I listen to a lot of podfic, but I tend to stick to trusted readers for the very reason you mention--I don't want my enjoyment of a good story spoiled. And I'm probably more critical of readers anyway because I start thinking how they could have fixed a particular problem as I'm listening and I just get annoyed that they didn't take the time to do it right.
I also always appreciate kind comments regarding my voice, because after listening to myself while editing I tend to be rather critical of it and it's not like it's something I can change, so...thanks for that.
Finally, thank you for this:
...seriously, the emotions in this fic is clearly conveyed in the tone of your voice...
A very good friend said that I read in such a way that my own enjoyment of the story comes through, and it's clear that i want the listener to like it as much as I do. And that's the heart of it, right there--sharing my love of the wonderful fanfic that's out there. I read stories that I loved myself (with an occasional exception when filling a request, gift, or charity obligation). Topspin is certainly one of my favorites and probably one of two I would point to as my best work (the other being Caught Inside).
Anyway, sorry to get so longwinded, but this comment has really made my day. Feedback for podfic is relatively thin on the ground anyway, so thank for taking the time to let me know you enjoyed.
Caught Inside...i need to check that one out. another thing, i usually have qualms concerning listening to podfics which fics i have not read yet, but i've made an exception when it comes to you. i listened to Beautiful Disaster and omg. it was like a religious experience. it's a shame for me to admit, but i usually skip the too-messy part in a fic since i don't wanna be driven to madness. but you read it, so of course i have to savor every word.
i listened to it on a Sunday, in my bed, for 8 hours straight. my family was a bit concerned that i was staring at absolutely nothing for the better half of that period...but i was enthralled you see. the frustrations just kept on building and building, and though i was tempted to skip some parts, to just scroll the fic forward, i couldn't.
i may sound like a crazy fangirl, but i am passed the point of caring right now.
i downloaded the ficmix to Beautiful Disaster, and everytime my iPod decides to shuffle it's way to one of the songs, i always--always!--listen to either Topspin or Beautiful Disaster. especially the song 'Spin' cos that song was played in both fics.
oh god now i know how one of those crazy fangirls feel
"Caught Inside" is one that I read on a rec when I wouldn't have otherwise because of the pairings. I generally prefer J2 as a pairing and this fic has Jensen/Chris/Steve, and Jared/Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jensen/JDM--and from that you'd think it was entirely porn, lol, but it's actually an enjoyable and well-crafted story, full of lots of Hawaii/surfer atmosphere.
But OMG, Beautiful Disaster. I love and hate that you mentioned that one. Love it because it was actually the story that made me want to do podfic in the first place. It's one of my all-time favorite J2 AUs, and I'm happy with the way the music that I added turned out. On the other hand, because it was one of my early efforts, I can't really listen to it because oftentimes I'm reading way too fast--I hadn't learned how to pace myself very well at that point.
i usually have qualms concerning listening to podfics which fics i have not read yet, but i've made an exception when it comes to you.
Thanks for that. Someone else said that a story I'd read was as good as a rec, and I appreciated that so much. It's totally down to the fact that I read what I love.
Anyway, it's been wonderful chatting with you. I feel like that's the best thing about fanworks--whether it's fanfiction (which has made me almost all of the wonderful fandom friends I have) or podfic--the interaction between people with a love of the same show. *waves*
but i think it was perfectly done. sure it was hard to navigate since eveything is compressed into one file, but i think it was awesome. /sigh.
was about to read But We'll Always Have Our Vending Machines (http://community.livejournal.com/infatuated_ink/44999.html) until i saw the link to the podfic. *squee* so thanks to you, i will spend today, once again, in bed with a cup of tea. :D
*waves back* it's my pleasure! i am particularly in love with this fandom cos unlike other fandoms, most people work hard to keep this fandom alive; all authors, podfic readers, commenters--everyone is simply amazing.
Just finished listening to Topspin, and have to say - you read it with great understanding of motivation, and your dialog is top notch...several pleasant hours of entertainment. I'll be sure to thank the author, too!
Oh, what lovely things to say! Thank you so much and I'm glad you enjoyed. This is probably in my top three favorite stories I've done; lazy_daze certainly deserves a lot of credit.
Howdy, I just wanted to pop in and tell you how much I enjoyed your reading of Topspin...you did a great job! Nice pacing, tone, slight differentiation for different characters without being too much...Thank you and I'm off to track down more of your work to download :D
