The Podfic Big Bang is meant to increase the number of long podfics with accompanying cover art (and/or sound effects/music). Podficcers choose a story from any fandom (including original fiction) to record, and then they are matched up with an artist (who designs a story cover for the podfic and/or contributes sound effects/music) and a cheerleader/beta listener ( if possible).

Beta listeners/Cheerleaders

Support the podficcers they are matched with by: listening to the rants; offering advice; listening to the podfic and providing reviews, comments, and general squeeing about the recording.

Artists

Read the story the podficcer they are matched with chooses and then make a 300x300 pixel sized cover for it. The cover should include the title of the story, the author’s name, and the podficcers name.

OR

Read the story the podficcer they are matched with chooses (and/or listen to the recorded podfic) and contribute music and/or special effects [songs and effects should be public domain or available under a Creative Commons license, please]. The podficcer should always have the last say in what goes into the recording, so please be willing to engage in a little teamwork!

Podficcers

Record fanfiction or original fiction. For posting purposes, all resulting podfiction will be split into two tiers.

  • First Tier: Has a required word count of 10,000 to 20,000. This still produces podfics that are well over an hour, but requires less time. A good jumping-off point for people who are relatively new to podfic!

  • Second Tier: Has a word count of 20,000 onward.

This is pretty brilliant, guys. Thanks.

I'm completely going to sign up and do something which makes me feel slightly ridiculous. I keep trying to talk myself out of recording like, 160K ice skating AUs. Or the Doctor Who fic which speaks to my Id but is probably just too damn violent for unwarned public consumption.

...and no, I don't know why I feel like Big Bang fics have a different standard or style than a regularly long pod/fic, but they do in my head. I'm sticking with it. It's probably just to overcome my embarrassment, because I would get a few hours into either of these and be overcome with shame. Deadlines and commitment might work, though.

I theoretically will be able to avoid the lack-of-recording thing, since if I pick the Who fic I've got my eye on I'll pretty much have to get all the really porny bits out of the way in the Christmas period, when most of my housemates will be away or out of the house. And probably the violent bits. There's a lot of porn and violence.

...although, oh my goodness, I really want to see a manip for the ice skating AU. How to decide which fic to do?

Anyway, do you want a beta? *sharpens my witty ways to say you have 50K to go*

(Seriously, this is a terrible influence. I flailed on a 130K podbang already this month, and now all I want is to start another +130K fic.)

Most of the porn is violent, too. And the torture scene has non-con. Just to keep it interesting. Unfortunately, the torture might actually be 40+ minutes long when read, which might just be too damn much if not handled in a really character-focused way.

Eeny meeny miny moe, catch a tiger....
Close. I think it'll come down to is it easier to get a Czech beta (I have one where I'll be next summer), or one fluent in technobabble (presumably, sci fi fandom)? ...wow, I have odd choices to make here.

Do not put off today (while your flatmates are out for coffee) the 23 minutes of porn which can't be read in a full house tomorrow. You will notice when they come back. Trust me, you'll be too paranoid to not notice.

*grin* Why, that is not a wrong thought. No, not at all. We should all be striving to record new and interesting things. I haven't recorded any ...kidfic, trans fic, unicorns, or one with integrated music. Or torture. Yet. (Yes, it took me a while to make that list.)

I know I could possibly find someone who has Czech language, but since I already know someone who I'm free to embarrass myself before, it seems a little redundant.

I was trying to finish recording a very luscious genderswitch, lesbian-sex with male pronouns fic (filled with sex) before my housemates moved in. I thought I had one more day, and then there was a knock on the door. My paranoia was never so great.

The porn won't record itself, you know.

Do you know what, on more thinking I realised that I have in fact recorded all those things except unicorns and trans *already*, I just never posted them.

...I think I reasonably fear that someone could successfully psychoanalyse my podficcing choices.

Whisper those sweet nothings into your microphone. Make them sexy. *grin*

No, no I mean that's the only things out of the list of torture, kidfic etc which I haven't done already. Don't worry, I have trans fic on my kindle, waiting to be read. ...and I don't have a single unicorn fic which I'm aching to read. This is sad.

Paranoia? The housemate in the room next to me has intimated her hearing is so good she can hear me editing/listening to porn though my headphones. She could hear the fan on my laptop yesterday from across the room, and I had to hover about two inches over it to hear anything.

Podfic choices do seem to be a bit of an Id-thing, though, for me at least. Unless it's 20 minutes long I'm not going to spend time podficcing something which I don't love and adore in a deep and abiding way. I don't want to get sick of it, so it has to be something I can read and reread and reread. And which I want to rec to the world. With the possible exception of things for Amplificathon in rare fandoms.
