A.K.A. The Podfics That Will Not Be Contained By A ThemeSo, I rec podfics on my journal on a semi-regular basis. Because of this, I keep an ongoing list of podfics I want to rec. The list, it is long. Kind of crazy long. I look at it and despair that I shall never make a dent in it. Generally, when I rec at my journal, I follow some kind of theme (not unlike the way reccing works here at amplirecathon). The themes can vary (fandom, subject matter, some other weird thing I think up), but there are usually a handful of recs for each one.
However, there is a problem with this, because there are some podfics that just
refuse to fall into the themes that I rec. It's so frustrating. I WANT TO REC THEM and they linger there, at the top of my list, only to get shoved down again and again because they don't happen to match whatever I happen to be reccing at the time. So that is my theme for this list. Rogue podfics that
will not be corralled!!!! Podfics that slip from my grasp every time I try to rec. All the podfics on this list have been shoved down my to-rec list at least twice, most of them more than that, because they didn't fit the theme. BUT NOT THIS TIME!!!! You shall not escape me again!!!

Summary: The first thing Stiles thinks when he opens the door is that it’s not his birthday, but someone has sent him some kind of cop stripper.Brief Rec: Ok. When I read this fic, my first thought was
"God, I hope somebody podfics this!!!", and then shortly thereafter,
knight_tracer did!!! Best. Saturday. Ever. I think I may have broken my mouse I clicked "download" so fast. I don't think that this podfic has left my iPod since. I love the story, I love the reader, and
knight_tracer just
nails The Hickey Scene
TM. Just listening to her read "Derek gives him the messiest,
meanest hickey Stiles has been the recipient of since basically ever" makes be grin like a fiend. She does such a great job capturing the patented Derek awkwardness and the Stiles flailiness! Just hearing
knight_tracer start reading it can lift my mood from basement to roof in about 30 seconds.

Summary: “For once, I want a guy to just walk up and sweep me off my feet.”
Brief Rec: I have this huge thing for the they-get-together-because-of-a-bet trope, and this is one of the best. The fic has this very lighthearted, off-the-cuff feel to it. This is
not to say that it feels unpolished, just that to me, it feels like there is nothing laborious here. It reads like
samanthahirr said to herself, "I'm going to sit down and write this delightful gem of a fic", and then
did. The
podfic captures this feeling perfectly. It's like
paraka said, "I'm going to sit down and record this delightful gem of a fic", and then
did. The reading is as lighthearted and fizzy as the fic is.
paraka seems to approach the fic with such affection and a desire to keep her touch light, which really allows the fic to sparkle. The readings of the supporting characters, especially strike me, since it would have been so easy to see them disappear into the background. The whole thing, the stolen kiss, the surreptitious glances, the dialog, it all just comes together in this wonderful, wee romp that leaves me bouyed and happy, very much like a glass of champagne.

Summary: None
Brief Rec: This podfic just breaks my heart into a million pieces, but for some reason, I can't stop listening to it. It's one of those podficlets that I just happened to run into, because I'll download and listen to anything
sly_hostetter reads. Sly does what she always does. She gives this smooth, easy reading that steps lightly over the depth of emotion and despair, and in doing so, yanks at my heart all the more strongly. It works so well! This podfic resonates so deeply with me and leaves me kind of teary and making up "fix-it" sequels in my head for hours and hours afterward.

Summary: From Blindfold prompt:
Jared is a phone sex operator. Jensen just discovered he's gay. He's a first time caller and pretty shy.Brief Rec: Dear
heard_the_owl, will you please read porn to me all day, every day? I think that porn is actually really hard to read effectively. I have a few readers in my mind that somehow manage to simultaneously revel in the sex and transcend it so that I can appreciate it on multiple levels.
heard_the_owl is one of those readers, and these two podfics (which I glommed together into a single audiobook, because
I can't have one without the other!!!) are just pitch perfect. Jared is adorably adorable and Jensen is adorably unsure and filled with bravado and
heard_the_owl completely nails their chemistry and attraction. It's sweet and sexy and altogether a gloriously fun ride.

aphelant link to podfic |
link to textRelationship: David/David
Summary: David stared up at him as he came to the table, and then Cook put a hand on David's shoulder and leaned over him. There was a really—really—weird moment when David thought for a second that Cook was about to—was going to—and David's stomach squeezed into a tiny knot, but Cook was just reaching over to grab the jacket he'd left on his seat.
Brief Rec: This is a longer podfic (about 2 and a half hours) and for me, it falls into a different category in my brain. The only reason it's not "comfort podfic" is because I don't usually have the attention span for a long podfic when I need comfort (those pretty much have to be short and sweet for me). BUT, if I
did have the attention span for it, that is where this would fall. The story is one of those lovely, sweet, coming-of-age, self-realization, love stories in which not a whole lot
happens but you are right there every step of the way.
aphelant's reading is absolutely perfect here. The way she captures David A.'s striking combination of innocence and growing sureness is spot-on, and she reads David C.'s reactions with this lovely combination of hesitation and desire. I love stories that unfold slowly, and in their own time, and the way
aphelant reads this one rides that perfect line where you don't feel rushed, but you are always captured and interested and moved forward at just the right pace.

Summary: Have 3000 words of J2 based on the terrible movie I saw on Lifetime today, See Jane Date.
Brief Rec: See Jensen Date is one of my go-to podfics when I need a laugh (it's kind of a toss up between that and
Sexile--also read by
cee_m. *Side Rec! Go NAO!!*) I just find her voice to be so uplifting and cheerful and full of amusement and it always sounds like she had such a great time recording. Her affection for the story just rings out in every word. The story is cute as hell and
cee_m's voice just brings it to life so beautifully. The first time I listened to it, I was on a bus, laughing out loud, and I think that the people sitting next to me thought I was a crazy-person. So if you need a laugh, definitely try this one.
[American Idol-8] Take My Hand (and Show Me Where We're Going) by

takola link to podfic |
link to textRelationship: Kris/Adam
Summary: "You asked for my hand."Brief Rec: I love listening to
takola read. I love her voice, and her pacing, and her accent, and the way her inflection lets the story unfold so naturally. I didn't know anything about this story when I heard it. (Full Disclosure: I beta-ed this podfic). Takola asked if I would beta, I said, "hell, yes!" and I just plugged it in and started listening.
jerakeen's story is a lovely one. An Inadvertent Bonding fic where the parties have to work together to figure out the best way of coping.
takola's beautiful, measured reading lets each detail of this world come to the fore and really does a glorious job expressing the frustration and growing understanding of Adam as he starts re-evaluating his life.

link to textRelationship: Frank/Gerard
Summary: Gerard's first book is called Leonard's Purple Balloon
, and it's about how it's okay to like purple balloons instead of red balloons or green balloons, even though your friends might make fun of you.Brief Rec: This podfic always makes me kind of weepy and happy. It's an absolutely
gorgeous post-band story that deals with falling into (situational) depression, and then finding your way back out again. My heart just breaks for Frank and Jamia, and Frank's slow recovery is so uplifting and hopeful.
inkjunket does an amazing job, keeping the reading careful, but still compassionate as Frank unravels. I'm especially impressed with the way she reads Jamia's lines. I think it would have been really easy to interpret her dialog differently, to make her seem more whiney or angry or passive-aggressive. I love the way
inkjunket reads her so that her absolute love and support for Frank comes through, even as she's trying to be happy in her own life. I've listened to this podfic at least a dozen times and it never fails leave me feeling so hopeful and happy at the end.
[Inception] Renovations by

link to textRelationship: Arthur/Eames
Summary: In which Eames builds a nest and (accidentally) lures Arthur into it.
Brief Rec: I absolutely adore listening to
anatsuno read. We don't cross fandoms very much, but I like listening to her so much that I'll often flee from my regular fandoms just to have the opportunity to have her voice in my ear. This story is charming and
anatsuno's reading is just spot on. As always, the pacing is perfect and the growing feelings and emotions kind of sneak up on you, but what I like most is the dialog.
anatsuno has this incredible way with dialog. Whenever I hear her read it, it actually
sounds like dialog and not like someone reading dialog. There is this complete naturalness to the way she approaches speaking characters that just completely bowls me over. I don't know if it is easy for her or not, but it
feels like there is an ease to the words and a flow and rhythm to the conversation that takes me right there, every time.

quintenttsy link to podfic |
link to textRelationship: Ryan/Spencer
Summary: Ryan/Spencer regency!au written for the anon_lovefest prompt "regency Spencer/any pretty boy", so as you can see, I had kind of a lot of leeway. Includes scandal, disgrace, and a shameful amount of skipping around the panic/tyv timeline for scraps of canon. In which Spencer is oblivious, Ryan is reckless, and Brendon is joining the navy.Brief Rec: I listened to this podfic the first time when I
barely knew anything about Panic! For some reason, when I read the summary, I thought it would be more cracky than anything. But it's not. In its way, it's actually kind of serious, and deals with the problems of being In Society, and being A Younger Son, and being Poor among rich people. There are bits of it where I just want to snuggle both Ryan and Spencer up and whisk them away.
quintenttsy does a wonderful job with the reading. As the story moves along,
quintenttsy's lightness of touch is just perfect for Ryan's recklessness. And the last line? The last line is delivered with a perfection that has me rewinding 30 seconds over and over and over again, just so that I can hear it.

link to textRelationship: Pete/Patrick
Summary: None
Brief Rec: This is one of those podfics that I put on when I need a smile. It has no summary, and I don't think that any summary I made up could accurately portray the funny, delightful hilarity of Pete trying to get Patrick to record pick-up-lines.
pennyplainknits is unfailingly a wonderful reader and the way she captures persistent!Pete and reluctant!Patrick is just spot on. I absolutely adore the way she reads Patrick's recording session, where he starts off wondering what the hell he should say and ends up just sinking into it. It is this charming mixture of laughter and awkwardness and calm. But the best. The. Best. Is Penny's flawless flipping from Patricks "regular voice" to his "sex voice", mid-sentence. It's just…. perfect.

podcath link to podfic |
link to textRelationship: Castiel/Dean Winchester
Summary: "Castiel, this is Detective Winchester," Bobby's saying, voice rough and real. It's a distraction, although a brief one, the angel glancing at him before studying Dean again with that same silent intensity. "He'll be on the Circle Murders too."
Brief Rec: I listened to this podfic when I was just barely getting into to SPN fandom, had only the vaguest sense of the characters and the world (had never seen an episode) and was just kind of downloading everything. It was my introduction to
podcath, and it was a beautiful one. The story is a completely awesome AU where the canon weaves in and out of the new world flawlessly.
podcath's reading is spot-on and absolutely consistent and steady throughout the 3.5 hours. Her pacing is just perfect, allowing plenty of time to absorb the details of an unfamiliar world, but not so slow that I was hanging around wishing that things moved faster. I also think that
podcath does a beautiful job handling the violence, the gore, and the emotions, here. Never over-the-top, there is a smoothness to her inflection that plays off the details wonderfully. This one is always one of the first to go back on my iPod when I get in the mood for SPN.
