So, when I started compiling my recs for Amplirecathon, I realised that a fair chunk were podfics where I wasn’t familiar with the characters. This post has ended up being half feelings about podfics I’ve listened to even though I’m not in the fandom, and in some cases have no idea who anyone is, and half where I am in the fandom. The main theme though is that these are podfics I love and really enjoy listening to.
Tequila Cake read by klb and bessyboo
American Idol S8, 0:03:42 (dialogue-only), 0:08:31 (full reading), 12:14 (combined), Kris Allen/Jim Cantiello, NC-17, written by cjmarlowe
I had a vague idea who Kris Allen and Jim Cantiello were before I listened to this but not much. This is so enjoyable regardless. Klb and bessyboo play off each other really well and the dual recording works really well for this fic. I also really enjoyed that I got to listen to two versions of this fic! There’s a dialogue only one, as well as the complete fic and both are incredibly enjoyable and work really well.
Ten Cups of Coffee read by knight_tracer
The Social Network RPF, 1:14:48, Jesse Eisenberg/Andrew Garfield, PG, written by harriet_vane
This is just completely and utterly charming. It’s what first got me into The Social Network RPF (and later FPF). When I first listened to it, I had very little idea who the people were. That didn’t stop me enjoying it at all and I’ve been back and listened now that I know everyone and it’s still just as good. The story is divided up into the ten cups of coffee and each cup makes up a chapter of the podfic, which comes with its own cover art of the cup in question. It’s utterly delightful.
How Not To Narrate, By Harry Lockhart read by elaineofshalott
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, 04:06, PG-13, written by igrab
The only knowledge I had coming in to listening to this was being familiar with RDJ’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. I really felt like elaineofshallot was the character and made the first person work really well. The whole thing felt really natural and organic. It just makes me smile really.
The Fall and Rise of the Black Parade read by argentumlupine
Bandom, 4:51:29, Frank Iero/Gerard Way, Ray Toro/Mikey Way, R, written by wordslinging
This was a fic I read when I first got into bandom and loved, but I enjoyed the podfic even more. It was a struggle for me to listen to, due to some of the subject matter and the sheer amount of emotion argentumlupine manages to convey. It’s incredible. I felt like it was me experiencing all the emotions the characters were going through. It’s an incredible, emotional punch to the gut but so very worth it. It’s sad and achey and so hopeful at the same time.
An Emergency of the Heart read by isweedan
Bandom, 1:44:04, Frank Iero/Gerard Way, Teen, written by bexless
This is just such a delightful podfic. It’s a podfic which helped me notice and appreciate so many things I hadn’t noticed before. It’s something which always makes me laugh and isweedan expresses Gerard’s thoughts and feelings in such a wonderful way. The delivery in this is incredible and listening to this is a pretty much guaranteed to cheer way to cheer myself up.
i am the hero of the story (don’t need to be saved) read by quintenttsy
Inception, 31:33, Mal/Dom, Mal/Arthur, G, written by electrumqueen
This is a fic which I really wanted to read but every time I started to read it, I just couldn’t engage with it properly. I still don’t know why. So when I saw a podfic of it I was thrilled. The emotions in this just felt so real to me. This is a story about Mal and she comes through so clearly in this.
Sigyn (binding is not punishment) read by huntsmonsters
Avengers (Movies), 24:55, Darcy Lewis/Loki, Teen, written by aria
The atmosphere huntsmonsters creates in this is incredible and her Darcy is incredible. Huntsmonsters captures her character so well and how she evolves (or doesn’t in some cases) over the course of the story. I can’t put my finger on what I love about this so much, but I really do love it.
The Birth of Sleipnir read by minthepsychic
Avengers (Movies)/Mythology, 3:33, written by khilari
Epic poetry! The rhythm of this is fantastic and it really sweeps you along. As well as that though, the emotion is conveyed really well. The scheming nature of the piece comes across really well in this reading. When I read poetry, I often struggle between putting the emphasis on the rhyme and rhythm or the emotions and content. That’s not a problem with this! Both come across beautifully.
Cut to Fit read by lattice_frames
Avengers (Movies), 24:40, Clint Barton/Darcy Lewis, Teen, written by kellifer
This is just so funny. I consistently laugh aloud at this, particularly Darcy’s reactions to things. Lattice_frames captures Darcy’s disbelief and attitude to the world incredibly well. The way she emphasises words makes things so much funnier. Another podfic which makes me smile!
