Amplirecathon 2012: Podfics for tea breaks (<15min), housework and podfics + ....

As my moniker clearly indicates, I'm into podfic. My 160GB iPod full of audiobooks and podfics is never very far away from me and I squeeze a listen in whenever possible: on the bike to and from work, on tea breaks or during tedious lab- and housework. Nothing motives me more to even look for additional (normallly avoided) tasks than a captivating recording.

Like podcath, who wrote a wonderful meta post for this amplirecathon about the use of "VOICES, SOUND EFFECTS, MUSIC, and VISUALS" in podfics, I'm also fascinated by the creativity of podficcers and would like to rec some of my favourites as well.



Podfics for tea breaks (<15min)


'Just Listen', read by sophinisba

Summary: Marilyn likes how plants hear.

Recorded for this year's Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology II 'Just Listen' shows the impact 200 words can have. sophinisba's calm voice transports the described sensory perceptions and suits Marilyn's character wonderfully.

This humorous non-fic recording about Osprey nesting habits is my current pick-me-up. I just can't not smile when sly_hostetter voices the enthusiam of the male osprey about the gift he has for his mate.

susan_voight's straight-faced tone for this cracky meta just underlines Hardison's exuberance and dedication.



'go the f*** to sleep, sherlock', read by lunchy_munchy

Summary: Do you know the bedtime storybook called "Go the Fuck to Sleep"? Yeah, that one! WELL, UH. So this fic is exactly what you're thinking

lunchy_munchy switches between John's anguish and desperation and the more tender moments seamlessly so that it's a hilarious roller-coaster ride full of giggles and awwwws.



'64 Colors' version 1, read by kalakirya & version 2, read by meri

Summary: Darcy's life is weird, but she kind of likes it.

There are two versions of this fic available, which I both love. They are a good example, why I enjoy multiple interpretations. While kalakirya's Darcy sounds bubbly, meri gives hers a more cheeky spin. Also, the idea of an art therapy Avengers-style is hilarious and adorable at the same time.





Podfics for housework

'Lunch And Other Obscenities', read by sophinisba

If sophinisba hadn't recorded this beautiful and thought-provoking tale about culture clash and friendship for last year's ladiesbigbang, I probably would never have found it.

themusecalliope used music by 'Les Fragments de la Nuit' at the beginning and end to set the right mood for the fairy-theme.



'My Life's Come Off Its Tracks', read by painted_pain

Summary: Dean tells her, things are going fine, yeah he got into a fight and no, he doesn’t want to talk about it. He’s getting better and better at this sign language thing. He looks at her brightly. Big smile. Opens his swollen eye as wide as it can go. Ouch, shit.

Making a child character sound childlike and not childish is a rather difficult task, especially over such a long podfic. But painted_pain brings both Wee!Winchesters and their friends to live in this angsty hurt/comfort fic.

Summary: Cooking’s just chemistry and time management..

cellardoorpodfic uses the two stereo channel in an interesting way to distinguish between Sherlock's thoughts and voice as well John. Maybe listening to this podfic for the first time in the lab wasn't a good idea, as one of the sound effects made me look around in alarm. ;)



'Time and Relative Perspectives in Space', read by cantarina, weimar27 & nickelmountain

Summary: Tall Tales four years later. With an unearthly twist.

Written and performed for the 'Pod_Together 2011' challenge this is a full-fledged audioplay of the highest sound and performence quality.

Oh, I love the "Odd Jobs Series"! It's one of my "comfort podfics" and part of the "favourites" playlist on my iPod. aphelant has a wonderful comic timing and gets Eliot's exasperation and slowly building desperation perfectly across.
