Tone & Pacing: KLB has a smooth, measured delivery, and her reading is impeccably consistent throughout the recording. I usually like a relatively natural, informal reading, and for another type of story, or in another fandom, I might have found it a little slower than I'd like, and just a bit too stylized, but in this case the story was in Adam Lambert's POV, and style and image are such an inherent part of how he presents himself to the world that KLB's delivery felt like the spot-on perfect aesthetic match. I think it helped me feel like I was really inside Adam's head as I listened.
Editing: Clean and clear, start to finish. It was easy to sink into the story without distraction.
Volume/Sound Quality: The volume was just right – I could turn it up as high as I needed if there was background noise, and in a quiet setting it played perfectly at a medium-low volume. It was consistent throughout the 90+ minute recording, which I appreciate; it's nice not to have to keep fiddling with the volume setting. Sound quality was also uniformly good, with no annoying background hum or other noises.
Music/Special Effects: None – for which I was grateful, since the only obvious choice would have been club music, which I would have thoroughly disliked if it had been behind the reading even briefly as a fade-out. (Don't get me wrong; I enjoy a brief snippet of music as intro to a story or chapter in certain cases, but fast, thumping music just overwhelms the spoken word.)
Fic Choice: This story was new to me, and I loved it. I think it was an outstanding choice for podfic. I don't want to say more, for various reasons, but I will say that I highly recommend this fic for its own sake, and that goes double for it when read aloud.
Intro: Short and simple, just the fic title and author's name. As I mentioned in my other feedback post, I would have appreciated hearing the reader's name here, as well, since I often listen to podfic in circumstances where I am not looking at the media player and so can't see this information in the metadata.
Exit: None, which (again) I don't like. I wish that all podfic readers would at very least say "the end" or something to indicate that they've reached the end of the fic. It's like seeing the last scene of a movie fade to black, and the credits start to roll. It lets me know that the story is over, and lets me stay mentally in the mood of the story for a moment instead of getting startled if – as often happens – my media player immediately starts playing the next track in a playlist, which feels like a rude shock. Personally, I also like a brief repetition of the story name, author's name, and reader's name at the end of a reading, again because I'm often listening where I don't have ready access to the metadata and if it's a long story, I may not recall what I heard in the intro.
Things I liked: As I mentioned in the tone/pacing section, KLB's reading was a beautiful match for this fandom and the POV character. Her delivery in the erotic scenes was low key but no less intense for that, and her voice in this reading has a subtle hint of sultriness that enriches those scenes without being at all theatrical. Her dialog delivery is gorgeous; in particular, she has an absolutely lovely Adam voice, recognizably his and also consistent with the style of the whole piece. It made the whole thing seamless. I believed in this Adam – which is important for this story, since there's a lot of complex stuff going on inside his head.
Things I didn't like: Covered under Intro & Exit. All else was made of win. :-)
Editing issues: None.
In summary: A keeper! This is going on my permanent playlist. Wonderful story, wonderful recording.

Date: 2010-02-08 01:47 pm (UTC)For the record, in my recordings since this one I have in fact starting saying both my reader name and "the end." I knew that the fact that this one had neither might get mentioned in the review, but at least I get to inform you that I have since wised up, due to the discussion in podficmeta, where this is a near universal preference (which is something hard to find in the world of podfic, and should be attended to on the rare occasions it happens!).
Anyway, I am thrilled that you liked the story and that the tone worked for you and the sex scenes worked for you. And that you were excited about the story, which really is one of the best I've read in the fandom. Just thrilled all around, really. Thank you!
