INITIAL DISCLAIMER: I'd only be calling anything I host "Amplificathon" if I get the blessings of the relevant mods. Otherwise, I'd just start a new small-fandom fest.

So. Obviously, from the title, I've been thinking a lot about hosing a fest like Amplificathon, or (original moderators willing) a full 2019 Amplificathon revival fest. But, I also want to make things easier for mods (me and whoever might want to help). So I did some work tonight, and wanted to share it.

POINTS
One of the biggest time-sucks, at least from my POV, was calculating points and keeping them updated. This burden could be significantly reduced through the power of GOOGLE DOC SPREADSHEETS.

THE POINTS SPREADSHEET

Here's my trial spreadsheet, so you can get an idea of things: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bQ44KG5aAXY2g4zkEVTQYcLJkc00hYTxfGNDU4bquYo/edit?usp=sharing

TALLY: Everyone's points in one easy-to-parse list. The values come directly from the contributor's page, so no need to update manually!

FANDOMS: This is the most time-intensive sheet. As new fandoms come in, mods would have to go to AO3 and look up how many podfics are available for that fandom. We'd want to subtract any new ones that have been posted since the challenge started, and then input the number in the posted fics column. The spreadsheet will then automatically list the number of points for the fandom.

LENGTHS: This is info taken directly from the Amplificathon 2016 rules. I don't have the full range here, because I am not THAT good at spreadsheets. I had to do the upper limit to get the contributor pages to work.

LANGUAGE: I need to add this, it would totally be a thing, I'm just tired.

PAIRINGS: Less a thing, see "Proposed modifications" below

CONTRIBUTORS: Here's a bare-bones example of a podficcer's stats. For each fic, you would put in the title, the fandom (more info on mixed fandoms below), and the length of the podfic. You DO NOT need to input the points and modifiers! Check out the lovely formulas in the C and E column. So shiny. And, of course, once we have the fandom points and length modifier, it's simple to get a point total for each fic!

And, while I doubt there would be any meddling with other's stats, I would prevent this by using the "Data->Protected sheets and ranges" tool. This way, contributors can only modify their own sheet, and not anyone else's. It would also be set so contributors could only edit columns A, B, D, and F (title, fandom, length, and link), so they don't accidentally make a change in the formulas.

PROPOSED MODIFICATIONS

1) No pairings points. I can't. That is so much work. So, so much work. With spelling errors and using just first names or full names and...no. Can not.

2) Mixed fandoms are more complicated. I would like to change the rule on adding fandom points together (so a big and a small fandom becomes 11 points) and instead calculate works as an average (so big and small would be 5.5 points, but two small would still be 10). But, if the original mods are firm on this, I'll honor it. As for data entry, at present, this would have to be entered manually, but my husband has some ideas on a fix here.

3) Data on fandom size would be taken from AO3, not Jinjurly's archive.

4) The individual podficcer is responsible for keeping their spreadsheet section updated. At the end of the fest, we'd look at the likely winners, and make sure that their data is correct (no wrong lengths or duplicates podfic entries, for example), and then know for sure who won.

I don't think I'd want to wait until March to host, but there is the tradition of March Amplificathon...so I guess it would depend on if people wanted to do things out of season, or do a trial run, or if I'm just making my own whole-new fest?

What does everyone think?
