It is shot in part outside Pittsburgh PA, where my husband grew up. The scenes that run behind the credits are *very* familiar!
I'm not from that far into the Appalachians, but I agree--I know some of those people. The other thing that's much like home is how bizarre events, taken in context, seem pretty normal. Example: Our office (semi-rural shop of the Department of Transportation) is pretty much shut down for the first three days of deer season, and no one finds that odd at all.
