There is considerable textual borrowing from both "The Final Problem" and "The Empty House". The story is... loosely inspired by the life of the scholar Al Hazen, who is referenced in Not My Man Godfrey. 

Summary:Where Caliph Ibn Moriarid grew weary of the disrespect of the Nile. It flooded when it wanted and how it wanted. It flowed through the lands he ruled and did not conform to his will.

 

Where Shua al-Holman was the greatest scholar in all the land. She'd invented a new math. She'd explained the sunset. Building a dam over the Nile might have been beyond her. Maybe. Sometimes, as her loyal companion, Yahya would say, "Kingkadie-Cowkadie.
