I never liked listening to books on tape or CD. I tried it repeatedly during the years when I had a 45 to 60 minute commute, but I continually found my thoughts drifting, driving several miles without hearing a word. I tried short fiction and non-fiction. I even spent an entire weekend listening to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (read by Jim Dale), thanks to tween-sitting a friend's girls. And I decided that my ears were for listening to music, not stories.

Fast-forward to February 2009. Following a list of SG-1 and SGA recs, I stumbled upon a story suggesting that I have a listen. Bwuh? I was skeptical, but I had 14 hours alone in the car coming up that weekend and there is almost nothing as boring to look at as eastern Colorado and western Kansas. And, wow! A whole new world opened up! Apparently having a prior emotional connection to the characters makes all the difference. (Two weeks after that I saw my first ep of Supernatural, making me officially poly-fannish, and therefore doubling the fic and podfic possibilities.)

And Now I'm A Believer... )

Thanks to the organizers and the reccers for providing me with more podfic to feed my addiction! And especially to [personal profile] general_jinjur for hosting the archive.

It’s been great to read about things that I share with some other Amplirecathoners: finding podfic in the last year, lurking on-line a bit more than intended, somewhat mono-fannish in their recs, and listening to stories at bedtime. I feel like I’ve been catching up with listening to podfics and the process of creating them, and am now more confident in discussing and sharing my thoughts about them. Here in the home stretch, I wanted to make sure I listed stories that hadn’t been rec’ed yet (note to self: next time, sign up for an earlier slot) but still worked in my own thumbs-up for podfics that people have already mentioned.

I have no theme to link these, other than I enjoyed them a lot and they happen to be Due South.

My favorite podfic ever:

Title: American Way
Author: Resonant
Reader: Luzula
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser, RayK
Cover: Cybel
Length: 2:21:40

New version of the mp3 at sendspace here.
Archive of mp3 at audiofic here.
Audiobook at audiofic here.

I just love everything about it. The story is absolutely hilarious and entertaining. I can't summarize it without giving away important plot points, but trust me, it will make you laugh and feel warmed to the heart and just plain good to be alive. Luzula's reading is perfect--leisurely, appreciative, and well-paced. It's clear that she loves these guys as much as they love each other. It sounds like she has a smile on her face the whole time. And Cybel's cover--probably the most beautiful, mesmerizing picture of Paul Gross I have ever seen. How is it possible that someone actually looks so good? This podfic is unmissable. Luxuriate in it.
..........
Another superb podfic I listen to over and over:

Title: Death-Defying
Author: Keerawa
Reader: Podfic_lover
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser, RayK
Length: 1:39

At audiofic, here.

This story is edgy, tense, and tragic without being utterly despairing. It's an AU, with one of the protagonists simultaneously in a different *role* and yet completely *in character.* There's a spareness about Keerawa's storytelling style that keeps the listener rapt, and Podfic_lover's deeply empathetic reading brings us directly into this harsh world where wry wit, unsentimental affection, and loyalty come together in a desperate search of some kind of redemption.
.......

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous:

Title: Stages I & II
Author and Reader: Dorothy Marley at Dreamwidth
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser, RayV
Length: 1:01:46

At audiofic, here.

A quiet little gem. At just over an hour, the recording is not short, but it's light and graceful as a feather, so it feels like a warm lovely half-wolf just settled in beside you and snuggled you contently. Love, denial, sexytimes, confusion, longing, realization--all read in Dorothy Marley's sure, soothing, and certain voice.
