Oh good, that's what drew me to this fic, so I'm glad you noticed the same thing I did, and you are right, this author is incredible - loved the complexity of it. Sherlock sees himself as a victim here, he's sort of in it to win it. And he does so by effing messing with John, during and after. It's a bit of a high stakes mind game, and John is distinctly outgunned, despite having pulled one over on Sherlock to begin with. I think that's what makes this John someone Sherlock is going to keep - because underestimated him so severely at the start, he respects him in a new way. I adore that line about John being less of an iron fist in a velvet glove but more like a chocolate with a granite center - dig in without care, and you break your teeth.
