The Lucky One by [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe
sherlock holmes; holmes/watson
cover by [livejournal.com profile] mific

0:39:59
mp3 36.6 MB
m4b 18.7 MB

notes: A story featuring Holmes, Watson and ‪Lestrade. An exploration of Holmes and Watson's relationship. Who is the lucky one?

The Presbury Letters by [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe
sherlock holmes; holmes/watson
cover by [livejournal.com profile] mific

1:55:51
mp3 106 MB
m4b 54.1 MB

notes: This features Holmes, Watson and Mycroft. Set some time after The Lucky One, during WWI. Parted by war, Holmes and Watson write to each other.
This proved unexpectedly tricky to record, due to the need to convey writing and reading letters, and even censored sections in letters. I'd love feedback on how it turned out.

The Rough Edges Series by [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke
sherlock bbc, black books; holmes/watson
cover by [livejournal.com profile] mific

1:15:07
mp3 68.7 MB
m4b 35.1 MB

notes: "Sherlock Holmes and Bernard Black: cousins. The rest of the family: terrifying." Starts surreal and funny and progresses to the family dinner from hell in the final story. The Black Books crossover is in the foreground in the first two stories, and just implied in the final story. I have to apologise for my dreadful attempt at an American accent. Apparently all I can do is a really bad Southern drawl, but I hope it kind of fits the character anyway. The music is from the intro to "Here Comes Your Man" by The Pixies.

ETA:  the podbooks have been re-uploaded, and now all contain cover art! thank you, [livejournal.com profile] cybel ! \o/

ETA: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lavvyan  for betaing "The Lucky One" ([livejournal.com profile] mific  apologises profusely for leaving this off the initial post - so sorry!)

Oh yay! I am delighted to see that you've recorded Sherlock Holmes fic. And of Katie Forsythe's stories, too! *downloads*

Since I'm pretty sure I'm going to love these, I'll probably save them up for some time when I really want a treat.

Thanks! Yes, I did see when I downloaded them that there was no cover art (I love cover art!) but not to worry, I'll just download them again after cybel uploads them. She is a good egg, cybel. We're so spoiled for choice now with podfic, but yours are on the top of my "listen to" list, after my gift from revolutionaryjo, of course!!!

I just finished listening to The Rough Edges series and I absolutely adore it! Your southern drawl is just right for Tammy. And you really captured the absurdity that is Bernard, Manny, and Fran in the first two parts. Your Sherlock is excellent as well!

I'll grab fresh downloads to get the cover art. I was wondering about that a bit, so thanks for the heads up. :)

Looking forward to listening to the other two! Hoping I'll get the chance to listen to them tomorrow.

*HANDS* OKAY. SO. I will try to compose myself so as to be comprehensible, but I may be overcome with joy at any moment. Just saying.

I had the chance to listen to The Lucky One and The Presbury Letters earlier today and I can't get over how fantastic they both are. You have such a natural way of reading that it effortlessly sucked me right into both stories. It felt like listening directly to the characters themselves. I thought the sound effects in The Presbury Letters were a great touch too. They added a nice, subtle nuance to the story without being the least bit intrusive.

All three of these are going to get a lot of repeat listening from me. The covers are gorgeous too. Thank you so much again! :D

I'm so happy that you liked it. I had a ton of fun with this one - after I was already well into recording it and realised there were OMG accents and panicked a bit! So I'm really glad it worked for you. :D

You should definitely check out Black Books (here's a youtube episode that'll give you an idea: sample episode (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvfG3HSDYA)) - it's hilarious - and crossing it with Sherlock was sheer genius by Basingstoke. Enjoy!

The accents wouldn't have panicked me so much as the Esperanto which I completely forgot about until you started speaking it. You're a much braver podficcer than I. :)

Mific, these podfic were wonderful, some of the best stuff I've heard from the Sherlock side of things. I thought The Lucky One was pitched just right, funny but sort of gave you the sense of long time companionship and mutual esteem built over time. Very enjoyable to listen to. The Rough Edges Series was quite funny, I thought you very brave to attempt that one with the American accent, I thought you did wonderfully, and it was even funnier as a podfic than as a series of stories. I particularly liked the way you handled the dinner scene and the cab ride home - your timing is perfect. And it made me miss Black Books, which was one of the more hilarious shows EVER. But my very, very favorite was The Presbury Letters, which made me remember why I love podfic - because it makes you feel, the way reading a good book does, but somehow better when heard rather than visually understood. I don't know if I ever would have read this story, but I would have missed out on some wonderful storytelling, and I loved the wry but desperately lonely feeling that you managed to convey. And some great lines, like Lestrade telling Sherlock to "sod off" and the regretful response of "if only I had the opportunity!" Seriously, excellent, excellent job with that story, and I look forward as always to hearing more stuff you record - wherever it comes from! Thank you...

Oh wow - thanks so much for the great feedback. I loved recording these Sherlock stories and I'm always struck by the depth in Katie Forsythe's fic - the subtle details she weaves in that make her fanfic such extraordinary character studies. I added the Rough Edges one in at the last moment - it was huge fun to do, even though I was in the middle before realizing there was an American accent, and Esperanto!! Eek! It was probably good that I had no time to obsess about it. *g* Anyway, I'm thrilled that you liked these. :D

So I downloaded The Presbury Letters ages ago and - good lord - they were absolutely spectacular. I adored your reading so much. The voices for each character were pitch perfect and the sound effects added a little extra touch that I really really loved. Katie Forsythe's prose is impeccable, but your reading certainly did it justice and then some. This was lovely.

I've just finished listening to The Presbury Letters and I can't speak highly enough of your recording. The little sound effects of a scribbling pen and turning pages were so subtle and yet so effective at sucking me into the story and it was absolutely beautifully read.

I just about melted away with pleasure while listening to The Lucky One, and The Presbury Letters simply broke my heart, not just because it's a fantastic piece of fiction but because your reading made it so... intensely desperate. Amazing work! ♥

Sorry for the incredibly, almost year late, belated reply!

You're right, it's hilarious!!!! I love, love, LOVE your texan accent for Sherlock's mum. OH MY GOD. I burst out laughing because it was so unexpected, and you did such a GREAT JOB. A great job across the whole lot really! I laughed so much as I was listening to The Rough Edges series, you delivered those lines so humourously!
