amplificathon 2013: calculating points

the points scheme always changes a bit from 'thon to 'thon, and this year is no exception! please read each section, and if you have any questions please ask us in the comments.

please figure your points and put the point value(s) on the post where you announce your recording(s). please present your points for fandom, pairing, bonus earnings and length for each podfic, then at the bottom of the entry include the total points for all podfics in your post (for easier mod tracking). the numbers will be added up and included in the table at the bottom of this post.

a) fandom points:
- giant fandoms - 1 point (spn & spn rpf; sga; harry potter; merlin; mcr)
- represented fandoms - 5 points awarded - any fandom that was represented in the archive as of march 7 2013
- unrepresented fandoms - 10 points awarded

b) relationship points (gen or any romantic groupings):
- giant relationships - 1 point awarded (rodney mckay/john sheppard; sherlock holmes/john watson; castiel/dean winchester; dean winchester/sam winchester; derek hale/stiles stilinski; jensen ackles/jared padalecki; merlin/arthur pendragon)
- represented relationships - 5 points awarded - any relationship (or gen) that was represented in the archive as of march 7 2013
- unrepresented relationships (or gen) - 10 points

c) bonus points:
- non-english language bonus: 10 pts
- new podficcer bonus: 10 pts for each podfic done for the fest (applies if your first ever podfic is posted during amplificathon)

a+b+c = subtotal
subtotal x length multiplier = total

length multiplier:
under 10 min: 1
10:01-20: 2
20:01-40: 3
40:01-70: 4
70:01-120: 5
120:01-170: 6
170:01-220: 7
220:01-270: 8
270:01-320: 9
320:01-370: 10
370:01-470: 20
470:01-570: 25
570:01-670: 30

It's going to be interesting to see how these multipliers work with the points. I do like that you're trying to encourage longer podfics this year. I suppose this means I ought to plan to finish a few things in the next couple months, huh? ♥

*dusts off forgotten Merlin podfic in anticipation*

I did a quick calculation of points at different times. Looks like points-wise it's still significantly better to record many shorter podfics over a few longer ones. Was that intentional? Not that I'm planning to "compete" this year (too busy, alas). But I still do like the multiplier system. I think it'll be easier once people get used to it.

...I'm getting excited to see all the shiny, new fandoms!

"Looks like points-wise it's still significantly better to record many shorter podfics over a few longer ones. Was that intentional?"

The point of the challenge is, and always has been, to add as many under- or un-represented fandoms and pairings to the archive as possible. Our goal is not to reward people for submitting lengthy podfics, it's to reward people for branching out and finding things that are new and interesting. We'd rather see someone submit 6 hours worth of podfic in 10 new and different fandoms than in 1, for instance. So yes, it's sort of intentional, but that's because our rewards system is not actually focussed on length, because that's just not what we care about in this challenge.

Luckily there are other fests and challenges that *are* geared towards longer podfic, which imo complements Amplificathon perfectly because Amplificathon is just naturally geared towards shorter podfic. The other challenges don't award points, though, maybe there needs to be a length-based challenge with a rewards system? That will never be this challenge, though. I call 'not it'!

The comment was simply an observation, not a complaint.

Sorry, I just wanted to leave a detailed explanation! People ask about the length points every year so I wanted to give a thorough reply.

Okay, good. I was concerned that I'd unintentionally upset you with poor wording. XD

Nah, actually you phrased the question perfectly, it was like it came straight out of an FAQ! Perfect opportunity to go into detail, basically. :)

I think this system rewards long podfic significantly better, actually!

For example, recording six ten-minute podfics will give you the same amount of points as one hour-long podfic (fandom/pairing points being equal). That was far from the case before! Of course, it's still the case that recording six one-minute podfics will also give you the same number of points, but I don't mind that--I mean, a one-minute podfic takes much more than 1/10th of the work it takes to make a ten-minute podfic.

I am actually completely happy with this system!

I agree, this system is much better! And ultimately it'll be easier to implement, I think. It took me some time to calculate duration points last year, lol. Numbers are not my strong suit!

Ooooooh so cool! It's heart-wrenching to think I won't have (much/any) time to devote to it this year but I'm SUPER PROUD to see MCR reach "giant fandom" status! \o/

If the mods have time I'd love to hear about the logistics of calculating giant fandoms & pairings! I'm curious about cut-off points and things, and like, the fact Derek/Stiles is a giant pairing but TWoof not a giant fandom for exampel? I'm guessing (since I'm not in the fandom I don't pay attention to what's posted >.>) that it's because the 6 other fandoms have big pairings but also many other pairings, whereas maybe in TWoof there's "less" podfic (it is a relatively young fandom after all) but nearly all of it is Derek/Stiles? Am I totally off? :p

I'm excited to see what the challenge brings this year! :D

I remember when bandom first showed up at the archive and [personal profile] general_jinjur made some comment about how sadly it will never be very big so all the fandoms can go in the same 'bandom' tag...WHO'S LAUGHING AT WHO NOW, JINJUR? (she says, not knowing if Jinjur will ever even see this comment :P)

You've got exactly the right idea re: large pairings that aren't also large fandoms. For Teen Wolf, the majority of podfics are Derek/Stiles, so even though the pairing is in the top few, the fandom isn't a contender against other, longer established and better represented fandoms. The flip of that is Harry Potter which is a huge fandom but doesn't have a concentrated, major pairing because it's got good representation across multiple pairings (and gen!).

Oh yay, I am so happy that length is rewarded more this year! \o/

I know I've written long and ridiculously opinionated comments about the points system previous years, but this year I am completely happy with it. : )

Two questions regarding points-calculation:

1) Since MCR is it's own fandom now in terms of points assigned to a podfic, does this mean that each band in bandom is also it's own fandom? Should I count a Panic-MCR story as a crossover? Or is a bandom podfic worth 5 points unless it has MCR in it (which brings the points value down to 1)?

2) How do you calculate points for pairing in a crossover? If I've got a three-fandom crossover and only one pairing, do I count the pairing for the fandom it's in and then gen for the other two fandoms? Does the podfic only get one set of points for pairing? Should I count gen only once, or can I have gen points for each fandom in the crossover? (I have a lot of crossover podfics to post....)

Thanks for the halp, and for taking the time to run this challenge <3
