Primary Hosting Site Poll

archive.org has been down for a couple days and because of that, I feel like a lot of podfic has been down? I've been curious about how much of podfic has been down or gives the impression of being down because the streaming options don't work, even if your backup links still work. (I mean, even ao3 had to make an announcement post of only archive.org being down because of the embeds showing error messages)

I'm running the poll on tumblr because it's easily shared and quick for casting the vote on, it will be open for the whole week. If you don't have a tumblr but want to contribute for ✨stats✨ leave a comment with "no tumblr, but I use [option]" When it closes I'll make a pretty pie chart and edit this post to show it, so I'll add the numbers there.

If you've got a tumblr account, please vote here! You can also join the "podfic" community, which is a new tumblr feature, still in beta so a little wonky in places, but it might be worth joining if you ever want to open the site and see podfic things?

Here are the options as a numbered list! I got a lot of them from "A Breakdown of Podfic Hosting Options" by GodOfLaundryBaskets, so check out their post if you want to know more about any of them!
  1. archive.org
  2. self-hosting (includes paraka)
  3. audiofic archive
  4. file hosting site, allows < audio > streaming on ao3 (dropbox*, blackblaze)
  5. file hosting site, streaming off ao3 (googledrive, dropbox*, box, mega.nz)
  6. soundcloud
  7. spotify
  8. youtube
  9. mediafire
  10. github
  11. other podcast site
If you, too, have Opinions TM, as a listener or a podficcer, on which ones are nice to use either for uploading or for listening on please comment on this post! I'd be interested!!

There's no general "other" option because I wanted to avoid things like "other - I don't podfic" comments

definitely 9 - Mediafire for me! I use box.com (which would be 5 - file hosting site, streaming off ao3) as a secondary/backup.

5 for me. Primarily, I use Dropbox, paid. Secondarily, Google Drive, which I luckily have a lifetime storage expansion (ex-Googler wife perk, yo). I think having 2 hosting sites is important. Lots of podfic from 5+ years ago are lost because the only hosting site went down and the ficcer didn't have a backup.

This data post on multimedia dead links crossed my tumblr dash a while ago. I'm not as plugged in to the podfic community as I used to be, so this may be old news, but I found the stats interesting as a podficcer/vidder: https://www.tumblr.com/destinationtoast/755302339631529984/13-hi-there-three-i-think-part-ask-incoming?source=share
